Police Exam to be Held November 16 – Last Day to Apply is September 16
YONKERS, NY – July 1, 2013 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano along with the Yonkers Police Department today announced that the City will begin accepting applications for a new class of aspiring Yonkers Police officers beginning July 8th. Yonkers Police will recruit potential officers through September 16 and administer the police exam on November 16.
“The City of Yonkers is proud to be one our nation’s safest cities, and will continue to prosper with the emergence of a new class of police officers who will protect our residents and continue to keep our streets safe,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “This is a great opportunity for qualified residents to contribute to the well-being of our community and join the ranks of one the best and most successful law enforcement agencies in the country.”
Individuals seeking to contribute to the noble and historic tradition of the Yonkers Police Department will join the ranks of officers entrusted with enforcing the City’s laws and enhancing the quality of life of its residents. The creation of a new class of police recruits marks continuing success for the department during a year in which crime rates have reached a seven year low, according to a recent report by the FBI. Considered the fourth safest city out of more than 100 of America’s most populous cities, Yonkers continues to thrive from a successful reduction in crime, due largely in part to the work of the Yonkers Police Department.
Charles Gardner, Yonkers Police Commisssioner, added, “We are looking for a diverse group of candidates to take our upcoming police exam. This is a great career opportunity with one of the most respected police departments in the country. Those who would like to be part of our team and help to serve our citizens here in Yonkers should sign up for the exam.”
All interested candidates between the ages of 18 and 35 years old and who are legal residents of Westchester, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland, and Bronx counties, are encouraged to download an application from the City’s website at www.yonkersny.gov or obtain a copy at Yonkers City Hall (40 S. Broadway), Yonkers Police Headquarters (104 S. Broadway), and at the four local police precincts throughout the City. Applications may be submitted in person or mailed to the Civil Service Office at Yonkers City Hall Mondays through Fridays from 8:30AM to 4:30PM or submitted in person at the Yonkers Community Affairs Division (36 Radford Street), Mondays through Fridays from 9AM to 7PM; Saturdays 9AM through 5PM.
The Yonkers Police Department will provide civil service study classes for Yonkers applicants starting this fall. Preference in appointment will be given to Yonkers residents who have resided in the City for at least three months immediately preceding the date of the written exam on November 16 and continuously up to and including the date of appointment. Upon selection of those who passed the police exam, police recruits will be expected to undergo rigorous classroom and on-the-job training to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to enforce laws and protect lives within the City of Yonkers.
