YONKERS, NYMay 13, 2014 – The Yonkers Board of Education Board of Trustees is today scheduled to appoint two people, designated by Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano to replace two term limited members from serving another term. Curtis Kendrik (1) and Pasquale Mondesando (2) will join seven other members of the Board, which is the official policy making body of the School District. Each will respectively serve for a five-year term effective as of tonight.

Kendrick and Mondesando are replacing two outgoing trustees, Trevor Bennett and Christine Balko, whose terms ended earlier this month.

Yonkers City Hall advise that Mayor Mike Spano appointed Kendrick and Mondesando after he reviewed recommended trustee applicants provided by his Education Redesign Team, whose members were tasked as a blue ribbon panel. Mr Mondesando’s designation puts into question the integrity of the Education Redesign Team.

After Kendrick and Mondesando take their seats on the Board of Trustees, Yonkers Tribune has been advised there will be a further reorganization of the Board of Trustees. President Dr. Nader J. Sayegh, Esq., is expected to be demoted from the office of president, with a push to have him replaced by Vice-President Steve Lopez.

Voting toward that end will be the newly appointed trustees, Kendrick and Mondesando, Judith Ramos Meier, John Jacono, William T. Ianucilli, and Steve Lopez. The final vote is expected to be 6 votes cast for Steve Lopez for the position of president, and 3 votes cast for Dr. Nader Sayegh, Andrew Api, and Nydia Perez.

Sayegh was told his position was nothing more than a “title” and held no sway or prowess over Mayor Mike Spano’s intention to fold the Yonkers Board of Education under greater control by City Hall.

1) Curtis Kendrick is a 30-year veteran as a higher education administrator. A Yonkers resident, Kendrick currently is the University Dean for Libraries and Information Resources for the City University of New York, the largest public urban university in the nation, and member of Yonkers Partners in Education (Y.P.I.E.).

2) Longtime Yonkers resident Pasquale Mondesando joins the Board of Education as a successful local businessman. Mondesando currently serves as president and founder of Rose Press Inc., where he serves regional printing needs. Mr. Mondesando also happens to be former Senator Nick Spano’s former brother-in-law, on Nick Spano’s first wife’s side.

  1. spaNO

Something happened at the 11th hour that gave Nader a stay of execution. Spano clearly has the votes to control the board. I hope Nader sees that.

  2. Board made the best choice.

As a lifelong resident I cant tell when the last time we had a well qualified President that knows the ins and outs of our school system. I commend all the trustees that recognized Dr. Sayegh clearly is the best choice, and more importantly his ability to work well with Superintendent Dr. Yazurlo and the Mayor. Good luck moving forward !
