Neil Geldof, 70, of Rocky Hill fought two tenacious battles with brain cancer and succumbed to the disease on Saturday, March 25. Neil was born on April 1, 1946 to Cornelis and Edith (Verrastro) Geldof in New York City. He grew up in Yonkers, NY, and was a 1964 graduate of Gorton High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, June Marino. He went on to attend Clarkson University, where he studied civil engineering and graduated in 1968. He married June in July 1969, then took a job in Hartford, CT, at the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). They moved to Connecticut and lived in Manchester and Wethersfield for a short time before settling in Rocky Hill, CT, where they raised a family and called it their home for 43 years.
Neil worked at the MDC for over 30 years, retiring in 2002 as the Director of Engineering and Planning. As a longtime resident of Rocky Hill, he was a true public servant who wore many hats. He served many years on the Wetlands Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission, and was Chairman of the Board of Education. He most recently was on the Charter Revision Commission. He was also an active member of the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, New England Environmental Association, and American Water Works Association. He was founder of and broker at Reliant Realty, LLC.
In his leisure time, Neil was an avid golfer, a sport which he loved since he was a young man, having earned a golf caddy scholarship. He could often be found on the golf course with his buddies, playing a “quick 9”. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and belonged to The Antique Motorcycle Club of America, Yankee Chapter. Over the years, he acquired a varied collection of cycles, including BMW, Moto Guzzi and Vespa scooters. He loved to travel with his wife, enjoying quick weekend trips and extended travel.
Neil is survived by his wife June of 47 years. His children; a daughter, Jennifer DeGrandi and her husband Anthony of Berlin, a son, Keith Geldof of New York City, his most adored and cherished grandchildren Nina and Rocco DeGrandi. His sisters; Valerie Annis and her husband Jay of Brookfield, Barbara Geldof of Wappinger Falls, NY. A Mother-in-law Jennie Marino, sister-in-law Joann Pagano and her husband Sal of Bristow, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 9:30am at the Giuliano-Sagarino Funeral Home at Brooklawn, 511 Brook St., Rocky Hill, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30am in St. James Church, 767 Elm Street, Rocky Hill. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Rocky Hill. Family and friends are invited to the Funeral Home Wednesday from 4-8pm.
