YONKERS, NY — March 18, 2017 — Accomplished Painter, Printmaker, Art Historian and  Art Critic mARTin Ries has two small paintings in the “Big Ideas in Small Packages” Exhibition. He notes that he had not “planned Mystic Landscape in Cosmic Web as a “small package”, much less a finished painting; I was experimenting on a miniature panel and it just happened to work. When it came time to name the venture, I was reading about our galaxies and this seemed to be a very small “web” in the cosmic whole. According to a statement by the European Southern Observatory, a “cosmic web” of galaxies holds together the universe: the assembly of galaxies form filaments “millions of light years long and constitute the skeleton of the universe, galaxies gather around them … lurking like giant spiders waiting for more matter to digest.” Or as Jackson Pollock once said, “It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.”

mARTin Ries’ title, “Harmonically Related Frequencies”, relates to the theory or study of a series of periodic waves of the physical properties and frequencies characteristics of musical tones. I linked the angst we usually feel about the current maelstrom of our age with the harmonies of the universe as well as the harmonies and concords in music we manage to create on our planet. The Harmony of the Spheres was an ancient philosophical concept that regarded proportions in the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets as a form of orbital resonance that was not audible, but simply a harmonic, mathematical and/or spiritual concept. An easy give and take; I think the painting comes out well.”
