YONKERS, NY — July 10, 2017 – On Thursday, July 6th, the Journal News reported the mismanagement of $10 million by the Yonkers Firefighters Union, Local 628 over the past 50 years. We acknowledge that the union has sent annual reports on their spending to the New York State Comptroller’s office and was only informed of this infraction in July of last year.We believe that our Yonkers Firefighters, who protect our city each and every day, did not purposely misuse monies from the fund. Once informed of a law that dates back to 1912 about the use of such funds, the Yonkers Firefighters union has been in compliance with the legal interpretation as to how the funds could be used. We are certain that they will continue to do everything in their power to remain in good standing. To address this issue, we need to ensure that we find a solution that does not punish the hardworking men and women in our fire department while simultaneously protecting our taxpayer.
