NYS Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

NEW YORK, NY — January 9, 2018 — “Wealth should not be a factor in our criminal justice system. Last week I introduced critical reforms to our justice system that included eliminating monetary bail for people facing misdemeanor and non-violent felony charges.

“Today, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez joined this effort and took a huge step forward for justice and equality by announcing they would no longer seek bail for most non-felony cases. I commend these District Attorneys for supporting our efforts to level the playing field and to help ensure that one system of justice doesn’t exist for the wealthy and another exists for the poor.

“It is my hope the momentum for equality continues this session with the passage of the much needed reforms I outlined in the State of the State.”
