Pro-tenant Group Blasts Spano for Refusing to Rule Out Joining the Breakaway IDC
WESTCHESTER, NY — January 4, 2018 — New York State Tenants PAC, the state’s largest organization dedicated to electing pro-tenant legislators, today announced its endorsement of Assemblymember Shelley Mayer (D-90) in the race for the 37th State Senatorial District. The seat, which is pivotal for determining which party holds the New York State Senate majority, is vacant due to Democrat George Latimer’s recent election as Westchester County Executive.
“Tenants PAC is proud to support Democrat Shelley Mayer for State Senate. Throughout her career, Shelley has been a reliable ally for tenants and a true fighter for affordable housing. She has voted to strengthen the laws that protect renting families from unfair rent hikes and evictions, and has strongly stood up to the landlord lobby to protect her constituents,” said Michael McKee, Treasurer of Tenants PAC. “We know that with Shelley in the State Senate and Andrea Stewart-Cousins as Senate Majority Leader, we can finally roll back the anti-tenant laws supported by the Senate Republicans and their IDC allies.”
In addition to supporting tenant rights, McKee explained that Tenants PAC was deeply troubled by the refusal of one of the candidates, Mike Spano, to commit to joining the mainline Democratic Conference.
“The most important vote a Senator casts is for Majority Leader, because without a real Democratic Leader, pro-tenant legislation will always get killed in committee due to the deep pockets of the real estate lobby,” said McKee.
“With Yonkers having the greatest number of rent stabilized apartments outside of New York City, it’s extremely disturbing to see Mr. Spano refuse to sign the pledge written by WCLA Choice Matters, wherein all other candidates agreed not to join the IDC. Despite his past support of tenants’ rights, Mike Spano’s refusal to reject the IDC makes him an unacceptable candidate for tenants and all true Democrats and progressives.”
In addition to the endorsement, Tenants PAC announced that they will be making the maximum legal contribution, $11,000, to Mayer’s Senate campaign.
