Israel is said to have concluded a deal with Russia regarding Syria’s upcoming military offensive In southern Syria near the Israeli/Jordanian borders. The Russians want to update the deal because of the Syrian army operation. Israel, the U.S. and Jordan are open to the Russian proposal but want to make sure it will include a firm commitment from the Russians that Iranian forces, Hezbollah and Shia militias will not take part in the operation and will be completely removed from the areas close to the Israeli and Jordanian borders. Israel wants Iranian forces, Hezbollah and Shia militias out of the entire Syrian territory and not simply out of the areas close to the Israeli/Jordanian borders and is coordinating its effort with POTUS. On the trade front POTUS has enraged the EU, Canada, and Mexico by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum. Retaliatory tariffs being imposed in response. Free-trade Republicans are grating at Trump’s latest move. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is in China to “discuss rebalancing the bilateral economic relationship between the U.S. and China.
