NY – January 29, 2007 — “At a time when Yonkers is experiencing an
unprecedented surge of gang violence and when even an off duty Police Capitan
has been assaulted while taking an evening walk, its outrageous for Mayor
Amicone to spend city dollars on a self-promotional mailer that does nothing to
make Yonkers safer,” said Dennis Robertson, Co-Budget Chair, and Third District
contender Dennis Robertson put Mayor Philip Amicone on notice that the he will
not tolerate the use of City funds for personal self promotion. Residents
received a glossy campaign style mailer last week from the Mayor’s
office. Councilmember Robertson pointed out the following misstatements of
facts that are contained in the Mayor’s promotional mailing:
size of the
force increased by 20 not 30 officers. 10 of the new oficers hired
replaced retiring personnel and did not increase the size of the force.
The Mayor did not propose money to increase the police force in his last
budget. The money that the City Council allocated to hire new police
officers was put into the budget over the objections of the Mayor. The
Mayor waited months to use the money before finally acting to bolster the
police force,” Robertson emphasized.

this mailing benefited the City, to whom it was mailed, and why it was mailed at
this time,” demanded Mr. Robertson.
said he would ask the City Council to consider legislation that would stop
further waste of the people’s money on such mailings. “Any politician who
wants to promote themselves should use their own money to do it; the people’s
money should not be used for self-promotion,” concluded Councilman Robertson.

or not the taxpayer money that was used for this mailer should be returned.
