— Yonkers City Councilmember (pictured right)Joan
Gronowski (3rd District), before having read Inspector General
(pictured left) Phil Zisman’s City Fleet Gasoline Usage
Report
was therefore specifically asked to comment about one car owner who is
mentioned in the report that resides in Pennsylvania.

Ms. Gronowski initiated her response by emphasizing, “I had
introduced legislation last spring calling for the placement of GPS
tracking devices into all city-owned vehicles, as a deterrent to personal usage
abuse when I had made FOIL (Freedom of Information Law)  requests for mileage records of all those who
had access to take-home cars.  I stressed that I had hoped the IG's report
[again, I haven't read it yet] would address the fact that computerized mileage
log-in information (if not already done) be documented every time a car
gets gasoline via the gas-boy system, or on a regular basis.” Ms. Gronowski
continued to stress that this “information would be monitored and available to
the Yonkers City Council or any member of the public who so requests it. She
continued, “although all but one of the city cars is on-lease, they should be
sold or phased-out as the cars depreciate beyond future sale possibilities, and
should not to be replaced. Ms. Gronowski then mentioned that, “ elected
officials and commissioners and a few others should have access to city cars,
but all other employees should be evaluated — especially those illegal civil
service employees who did not take appropriate testing, and who are also given
these city take-home vehicles.  Lastly, if many of these people live in
places like PA, Putnam and even Duchess, and if the rationale made for many of
their take-home usage is that they are on call 24-hours, how likely it is that
they will be on the scene in Yonkers in case of a true emergency if it takes
them upwards of an hour to return to Yonkers from their far-off homes?”

  1. I can’t believe Lizewski’s brother-in-law was in charge of the GasBoy investigation. Only in Yonkers could you get away with this. For Zissman to allow this should be an ethics violation in itself. How come he didn’t refer himself to the Ethics Board for review? Zissman obviously has to go.

  2. poster at 9:46 we have had to make cutbacks so the lear jet will have to go but we will pay your commute by helicopter

  3. The report said that the YPD unmarked vehicles are not permitted to go home with the employee. What a farce. It is common knowledge within the department that every captain, every detective lieutenant, every detective sergeant gets a car assigned to them and they take those cars home every night. More waste.

  4. Did anyone notice who investigated and wrote the report? Ed Benes, brother-in-law of DPW Commissioner John Liszewski who was in charge of monitoring the Gasboy system. Talk about a conflict of interest. What a joke.

  5. in 1981 I was offered a city car ..and
I was head of the law department…I declined..and so should everyone else
these cars are expensive both in terms
of the leases and the gas used..and they
are a bad model to set for a government
that needs to operate in a sparten way

  6. No way is an elected official having a taxpayer funded car justified. We have always had elected officials and they were not always given a car. I believe this perk started in the early 1980’s It’s time to STOP it. Dee Barbato takes her city car to WP to her second taxpayer funded job. Liam the Lep. is downright arrogant about his right to a taxpayer funded car. What a bunch of bottom feeders. Shame on us.

  7. ACCORDING TO SNOOZE 12, AMICONE (I MEAN SIMPSON) IS PREPARING A STATEMENT. DUH!
IT WILL PROBABLY GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
“ALL IS WELL HERE IN YONKERS. NOBODY DID ANYTHING WRONG. WHY DO YOU IN THE MEDIA NOT COVER OUR POSITIVE STORIES?
WE NOW NOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM. WE ARE FIXING IT AND NOW MOVE ON AND LEAVE US ALONE”
    MAYOR AMICONE

  8. Hard to believe that the same old idiots are talking about Spencer.
Amicone has been in charge for 6 years, this is all on his watch. He and he only is responsible and it’s down right irresponsible to allow some city worker to commute from PA on the taxpayer. Actually is unethical and morally wrong.
Blame Amicone as he is supposedly in charge.

  9. Under John Spencer, there were 231 city cars. An unreal and abusive number. Amicone has cut that number significantly, but still not enough. Yonkers should have maybe 50-60 city cars.
Probably, the current number will go down for the next fiscal year starting in July.
Some cars, as many as 50-60 counting elected officials, commissioners and some police brass are needed and justified.
That number does not include white collar city workers below the rank of commissioner, who should be using their own cars.

  10. City Hall said there were only 140 take home cars, yet this report says 203????
Regardless, the City of Stamford, CT, much larger in size than Yonkers, only has 69 take home cars, including cops, fire and others on 24 hour call. This was written up weeks back in Stamfordadvocate.com newspaper.
Of course, the remaining cars assigned to some City Council members should be abolished, including Chuck-The Reformer-Lesnick’s. So much for leading by example…
    Arch Stanton

  11. Well, Joan doesn’t want a city car, and I think Murtagh also did not want one. All the others have a city car, using city gas all on the taxpayer’s back, and just which pump did they use? The one that didn’t record things?

  12. You do not speak for the public Onestlee. I for one do not expect that I pay for a car and free gas for any City employee police and fire included. Get your own car or use public transport like everyone else. An audit of how many times these vehicles were used in an emergency would tell the whole tale, isn’t that the reason they are supposed to have the cars in the first place.
How is it that Blanchard appears to be driving a City car? It must be for when the Mayor has a legislative thought at midnight so he can summon corporation council office to write up the wording?

  13. Above poster is right. We need to separate the wheat from the chaff here. Gas use of all emergency personnel (police, fire etc.) should be separated from the “city haul” parasites.

  14. Where are the rest of the City Council and Administrative Assistant’s gas usage figures???
This report is incomplete. The public expects the police and fire vehicles to be gassed at our expense. But I want to know about the gas usage for the leeches in City Hall. Where are those figures Mr. Zisman??

  15. THE NEXT QUESTION HERE IS DID ALL OF THESE “EMPLOYEES” DECLARE ALL OF THIS FREE GAS PLUS THE USE OF CITY VEHICLES ON THEIR TAXES?
IF THEY DIDN’T THEY OWE A LOT OF BACK TAXES.

  16. Congrats Mr. Zisman. Great job and Kudos to Joan for bringing this up. Shame on the rest of the losers on the Council. Where was Mr. accountability Chuck. The most sickening part of this will be the way those not behind this initiative will try to claim ownership of this, just watch.
Question for Mayor Phony: I live in Boston if I get a job working for the City of Yonkers can your gas up my Lear Jet?

  17. This has been an ongoing problem for years, and it only got worse, thanks to this idiot mayor we have for putting us in the hole we are in.this guy all he does is give out tax breaks to his developer friends and hands out 125k a year jobs to his flunkies and we keep getting taxed each year, and not only that he doesnt do anything about it???? did he cut down his loser staff????? NO. all he did was ask the unions to give back!!!! we need all the cops and firemen we cant afford to lose anyone, but marty peterson the mayors belhop-driver that will save over 100k ayear, lorrian lowpez ged grad making over 135k do do what??? i can name 20 losers that are milking the tax payers of yonkers 20 losers=3mil a year with the benefits???
    shame on you mayor…

  18. Now that we have confirmed abuse of the cars. (we all knew about them before, but now it is confirmed), what is going to be done about them? Like take them all away.

  19. This guy couldn’t find an inmate at Attica. Please get rid of him and select a competant Inspector General. PLEAZE!!!

  20. Can someone dig up and publish a list of everyone who works in city hall, what they are paid, if they get a city car or not, and most importantly WHAT THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE
    That would be HOT.
I’m sure one of the mayors assistants, aides, or special assistants will be quick to do this for us.

  21. If the clown was to have good organizational skills we would not be in the financial mess we are in,get rid of take home cars, get rid of your 130k driver, lowpez and a few more busy bodys in city haul we would save millions a year …….wow almost 2mil in gas what a shame

  22. Isn’t there like Ox-green-moron going on here. We push Green initiatives to conserve fuels & look for alternative ways & better ways to build but we consume fields of gasoline. I’d love to see the chart for the expense when gas spiked last Summer 08. That was a 6 plus month strtch of $4.00 ++ gas. We need trollys and a downtown to go with them.
Btw…why are all of the roads in the Bx & Yonkers totally ripped up. I am mangling up my car with the craters? Is it all con ed stuff?

  23. I just read this report. It is stunning. Oh my God! Zisman is quite the precise investigator. No names in the report for all the abuse of priveledges he has uncovered. It’s “one person…” and then, “another person…” so you are left guessing who drove hundreds of miles on a weekend vacation somewhere on the public’s expense.
Good job. And Gronowski gets credit for pushing this.
