Responding to Amicone’s Latest Attack on Council’s Deliberations of Mayor’s Nominees to Landmark’s Board By Chuck Lesnick

Lesnick_Chuck “Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone today released a press release accusing the City Council’s Intergovernmental Relations Committee of delaying the mayor’s nominees to the City’s Landmark’s Preservation Board. Again, the mayor has chosen to blast the City Council rather than to work in a cooperative manner. But that is not unusual for this mayor – he failed to cooperate with the Council during this year’s budget crisis too. Similarly, when Mayor Amicone did not get what he demanded, he subsequently launched a political campaign in the media blaming the council for everything he could think of. I believe the People of Yonkers deserve better.”

Background on Landmark’s Board Issue

“Only weeks ago, Mayor Amicone failed to emasculate the Landmarks Board through his own Charter Revision Commission process. Following public disapproval of his attempt to thwart good government, the mayor withdrew his proposed amendment. Now, unfortunately, he has decided to continue in his effort to change the Board’s direction through the official appointment process – and he has the colossal unmitigated gall to accuse us of playing politics!”

“The Mayor’s latest attempt to tighten his grasp on the Landmark’s Board has resulted in his trying to bully the council by further grandstanding in the press rather than working with his legislative partners to achieve a consensus. Had the mayor taken just one of our five suggestions for the Landmarks Board over the past ten months, we would not be at today’s impasse. Clearly the mayor does not want cooperation but rather, total control.”

Council Performs its Due Diligence

“Even before we interviewed the five mayoral nominees, some council members had asked me to put off a vote, scheduled on September 16, so that they could further examine and reflect on the qualifications of each of the nominees in order to determine whether they met the standards set forth in section 45-3 (c) of the City Code that each candidate possess "a demonstrated interest, competency or knowledge of historic preservation."  Furthermore, our counsel is reviewing the question of the length of terms of office for the vacant positions.”

Moving Forward

“The Council is well aware of the timing of its own meeting schedule and that of the Landmark’s Board.  We are both scheduled to next meet the evening of Tuesday, September 22, and a quorum is anticipated at both meetings. As always, we will act appropriately so as to not delay any projects.”

“Since Mayor Amicone seems ‘hell bent’ on getting the Greyston workforce housing plan approved by the Landmarks Board, he would do better to have his staff spend its time more wisely by drafting language for performance and completion bonds for the Greyston project (and get the police the equipment they urgently need) instead of issuing polarizing press releases.”

Chuck Lesnick is the Yonkers City Council President.

  1. All those rumors come out of the Mayors second floor staff. They are distractions or at this time of the year what passes for issues in the political election races. Nuff said.

  2. landmarks or no landmarks, either way SFC, Alex street, and most developer are NOT going to build an outhouse let alone anything of significance anytime soon. While the stock market may look appealing, there is no shot in hell that Yonkers can get the bonding to build the infrastructure & the developers cannot get the money to build.
This giant waste of time is really just a GIANT WASTE OF OUR TIME.
Next topic, next Mayor, and next council please!

  3. Blame-icone is only lookig to help himself… for get about the people of Yonkers.
This guys is living in his own little bubble.
Chuck is Chuck but he has much more of a clue about how WE feel… Blame-icone continues to go on crying and blaming EVERYONE for HIS FAILURES. The guy is a miserable failure and Yonkers will continue to be the same till he is finally out.
You can count the homeless on the waterfront rather than actually people who are there to visit…
Keep Dreaming Phil. Start taking ACCOUNTABILITY!!!

  4. This issue is less about Landmark Board appointments (or the bullet proof vest issues recently raised) but about the dyfunctionality of government in Yonkers.
The vast majority of taxpayers don’t care about these squabbling issues between the Administration and Council.
What we care about is moving the city forward, supporting businesses expansion, reducing government waste, etc.
Geez…I’m sounding like a politician….which is funny since no one in Yonkers seems to be talking about issues to help the city but instead of talking (a.k.a. bitching and complaining) about stupid, petty stuff.
This is all wasting time and money.
Tell these guys to grow up. Your job is to help the residents of Yonkers…..and you’re not doing your job.

  5. Lesnick does not do Historic Tax Credit work in Yonkers. Nor does he share profits with his former law firm, Smith Buss & Jacobs. All council memebersmust report their outside income to be sure that there are no conflicts.

  6. Stop squeeking Mous…You are clearly just a hack! The proposed “projects” have been proven failures. Yet amiclown blights downtown. Nice Smart Good business Smart Money. Keep making us Proud. Please raise the Taxes. Please take more money from us!

  7. PHIL AMICONE MAY BE THE BIGGEST PUNCHLINE IN YONKERS HISTORY.
AMICONE YOU ARE A JOKE AND WE WAIT YOUR EXIT FROM YONKERS.
YOU HAVE DESTROYED THE ONLY TIME IN YONKERS HISTORY THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A GAMECHANGER FOREVER.
INSTEAD YOUR EGO, ARROGANCE, IGNORANCE AND JEALOUS VENDETTAS HAS DESTROYED THIS CITY, MANY OF ITS CITIZNES AND THE MORALE OF WHAT ONCE WAS HOPEFUL AND FAITHFUL YONKERS.
    THANKS BLAMEICONE…
    THANKS FOR NOTHING…

  8. Why hasen’t the Inspector General looked into the apparent conflict of interest in having Lesnick pushing landmarking, and then referring all the associated legal work to his ‘former’ law firm, Smith, Buss et al? This could even be criminal if Lesnick is getting paid through ‘alternative’ channels. Maybe Cuomo should also be taking a look at this. What do you think Hezi, now that you are firmly entrenched up both Zissman’s and Leznick’s derrieres?

  9. Ahh how sweet!
To think–Phil and Chuck are dueling it out over us — the little peasant taxpayers!
    to protect our interests
What would we ever do without them!

  10. Lesnick wants to feather his own nest by appointing people who will landmark anything. Keep in mind his “business” is all about tax credits for landmarks and his business will generate fees. So will his law firm Smith Buss etc…
    LIAR and BS Artist.

  11. The Mayor is just trying to pack the board with his friends who will vote his way. Some of his nominees were ok but a few could not even think of historic buildings in Yonkers that excited them.

  12. Lesnick says, “As always we will act appropriately so as not to delay any projects.”
That’s got to be the funniest, but also the most blatantly false line of the year.
Lesnick is the Crown Prince of stalling and delaying. And he has the dismal record to prove it.

  13. I meant to type “Can’t” not can
Why does the Mayor keep picking fights with the Council that he can’t win. It was probably Murtagh who wanted to have time to review the applicants. Ultimately it is the Council who approves the nominees and the Mayor keeps pissing the Council off.

  15. I am glad someone woke Lesnick up. The Mayor is not his friend and he needs to respond strongly. The Mayor is not acting in the best interests of the City and Lesnick knows how to fight back when he needs to. Now is one such time.
