An Open Letter to the Taxpayers of the City of Yonkers BY EDWARD DOYLE, JR.

YONKERS DPW Teamster Local 456A line has been drawn in the sand. Over the years Local 456, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, has negotiated in good faith with Mayor Phil Amicone and his administration. We have never turned our backs on any negotiated agreement. The fact is that the Teamsters have given back to keep brother Teamsters working and to maintain the service that Yonkers taxpayers deserve and have always received from our members.

The Amicone Administration has turned its back on both the Teamster Union and the taxpayers of the City of Yonkers, leaving a string of broken promises.

Despite the fact that Teamster employees mad substantial monetary sacrifices to help the City last year, the Amicone Administration is making false and unsubstantiated accusations against union members, blaming them for the pile up of garbage on the streets. However, it is the system imposed by the Amicone Administration that has caused the problem. The system does not work. The change to one day per week pick up instead of two, increases the lengths of the routes, and a reduction in staff by fifty-four (54) employees resulted in the garbage collection problem.

The workers are doing their jobs. Assistant Department of Public Works Commissioner and Sanitation Supervisors have been following Sanitation trucks to make sure they are at their assigned routes. No disciplinary action has been taken against the workers.

Local 456, I.B.T. stands by its members who are performing their assigned duties admirably under very adverse conditions.

Edward Boyle, Jr. is president of Local 456, International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

  1. OINK, OINK, OINK LIKE THE REST OF THE POLITICIANS. MORE, MORE, MORE. THE WORLD IS CHANGING FAST SO FAST THESE UNION THUGS ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH IT.

  2. Adios, you are so wrong I am sorry to say. Most towns that have private carters require residents to use one company so everything is uniform and there are no disagreements between companies. The companies set the prices across the board and there is little competition. You would end up paying more in the end. What do you think, private companies dont offer health insurance or retirement plans of some sort? They all pay a minimum of $25 hr in this area so where are the real savings. If you think we are given the world here in Yonkers, youre wrong. WE havent received a raise in three years and most of us accept this w/o hesitation or demands. No where in the past two years have we asked for a raise. People forget back in the Spencer administration that we worked one Saturday for free a year. I know its only one day, but the garbage spilled over into the following week, resulting in a longer day w/o overtime. Fiscally tight NYC gave their sanitation men a 20% raise back in 2007. Well raised the starting salary 20%.

  3. Maybe but we’d have control over who we use, and have none of the macho mob drama that we have every year. As it stands now everything is on the table and up for discussion in private industry. It’s only in the public sector mob run unions that think they have the power.
Everything can be done when there is a will. This old thinking is passe and so are these union dinosaurs.

  4. OK, so I hear some talk about private companies. First off, most are unionized and their workers get paid pretty much the same as the city workers do with benefits. One local company pays their drivers $38hr, 20% more than the average Yonkers worker. In addition, they charge astronomical rates. I had a private carting service where I lived and it was $40 month for one can. Anything extra, including two cans was more. It costs Yonkers roughly $30 million for the entire garbage collection system including salaries and carting fees from the county. So if you think eliminating it saves so much money, youre wrong. That equates to about $2000 per tax-paying household, minus your private fees and you would be near even again. Plus who would plow your streets and keep them clean? The tax dollars would still be needed to fund those programs. So in the end, you would be paying a private service to remove your garbage, and have the same tax bill…not a smart move in my eyes.

  5. ALL OF THESE CREEPS SHOULD BE FIRED. I’D GET RID OF ALL OF THESE UNIONS AND GET A PRIVATE COMPANY TO PICK UP THE GARBAGE. WE’D SAVE A SMALL FORTUNE. THE SAME FOR THE POLICE AND FIRE, GET RENT A COPS. THE TEACHERS SHOULD BE HIRED ON A YEARLY BASIS AND ANYTHING LESS TAN A 90% PASSRATE AND THEY’D BE REPLACED.

  6. hey guess what you asses…………go FLUCK YOU!!!!
your garbage may be picked up if we can get to it and your garbage better be properly bagged, not contain glass, plastic, or paper, and not exceed 40 pounds per bag/can.
and we’re going to take our lunch hour and our breaks….and if we get liquid in our eyes we’re going to need to flush our eyes or if we strain our backs we’re going to need immediate medical attention.
and any work above and beyond 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week will be at our OVERTIME rate of pay. that is assuming we even want to work overtime because it may be worth more to us to see your dirty ass garbage rotting in front of your shit shack.

  7. The teamsters thinks it is the 80’s..Adjust and do your JOB…I seen the garbage workers take approx. 25 minutes to do one street, when, in the past it took “5” minutes…Can anyone say “X-MAS TIP”…Screw them,I have a can of “maggots” with garbage form them…Enjoy your treat…Can anyone say “WASTE MANAGEMENT”..Start the process City Hall…

  8. Perhaps it would be easier on the backs of the garbagemen and more crap could be picked up if they worked a REAL full day like everyone else. Even a 8 hour day is a joke in the world today. Most people work 10-12 hours with no overtime, no ‘mo meals,” no ‘short turnaround’ etc. While I understand that your work is physically difficult, perhaps if you worked like everyone else, a real day, you could get more done, and at a pace that would not kill you.
Oh, and like everyone else, NO OVERTIME. You dont deserve it. Anyone union that lets rats lose, and doesnt even apologize, but in fact files a grievance deserves NOTHING.
PICK UP MY DAMN GARBAGE YOU LAZY BUMS
    YOU ARE LOSING THE WAR

  9. SOLUTION:
PICK UP THE GARBAGE AT CITY HALL (2ND FLOOR) AND DUMP IT IN CHICKEN ISLAND WITH THE REST OF HIS DILLUSIONAL DREAMS!
ALL TO BLAME IS THE BLAMER AMICONE HIMSELF!
THE BIGGEST PIECE OF SH*T THIS CITY HAS EVER SEEN! WORST MAYOR IN OUR HISTORY.
    FACT NOT OPINION. THE WORST.

  10. Nothing wrong with unions. It’s the leadership of the civil-service unions. This is 2010 and they behave like a bunch of 1954 On the Waterfront cafones. These kind of bully boy tactics don’t win you any fans in the court of public opinion. You guys have got to have some among your rank and file that are a hell of a lot smarter than daddy’s boy, Eddie Doyle, Jr. and daddy’s boy, Tom Manzo. Stand up to those two bums and get yourself some new leadership.

  11. It seems rather funny now that the garbage is piling up all over Yonkers streets & the smell is gross, That now many people have complaints about the garbage men not moving fast enough !! What a slap in the face! When they started early ran through the routes and finished fast, you did’nt have anyone crying & moaning about that!! Now that things have changed for the worse thanks to the mayors stupid plan, people are pissed that you used too “GET DONE EARLY & LEAVE”?? You can’t have it both ways people….. I would rather have them start & be done as fast as they could too get off the roads & have my street clean again!! This sound like a better plan too me than what we are looking at now!!! As long as the work was getting done it was good for everyone!!!!! Let’s not be hypocrites !!!!!!! DPW workers work hard for Yonkers & we should be backing them & not bashing them!! Yonkers is turning into a shit hole fast and The Mayor better wake up and smell the garbage!! The problems start with him and his office, not with the hard working people!! And please stop bashing unions! They are what helped build Yonkers!!!!!!

  12. Is this guy in the photo Eddie, Jr. If it is, he looks like aa simple shit. What’s with the nepotism? First daddy and now junior. The old man was no damn good either. He was a cheerleader for the Judge Sand’s low income housing which has not helped Yonkers.

  13. Wasn’t this the guy who was rolled out when the ridgehill project was up for grabs, shouting about union jobs. They never came. They used union scabs. Ha! Ha1 Ha!
Go away and stick your good faith, brother, where the sun don’t shine.

  14. Tired…I also understand where you are coming from because everyone is used to waking up in the morning or coming home from work and the garbage is gone. The city gives us an incentive to leave when we are done and the incentive is still there. The routes are too heavy for us to complete them so it appears as though we are slowing down and we are not. Believe me, each and every can is heavier than before so it indeed takes a few seconds longer to lift each can. When you are doing 500+ houses it does add up. Everyone is used to us rushing and getting done and now it is impossible to rush because its too heavy. When we had twice weekly pickup, there are 10 holidays in which the following Tuesday was a “double day”. Well practically every route finished after noon or 1 oclock. That is without taking breaks or lunch, and a 6 am start time, not to mention 28 trucks on the road. In addition we all work fast to beat the heat and traffic in the afternoon. Now that there are 11 less trucks, how can the work possibly get done? WE are not machines. We do pickup more weight than every surrounding town/city. Why cant anyone see that? We are all picking up the same weights that we did in the past, nothing has changed.

  15. You know leevin40..
I agree with some of what yonkerstronest said too…and I appreciate his position on the union and the rats.
But you’re characterizing me and others who disagree with the way you guys are “slowly working” as morons really isn’t helping anything.
I may be a moron and a taxpayer and an asshole but I suggest you guys focus on the taxpayer part of that statement.
As many of readers on this board know, I cannot stand the Mayor…but the way you guys are going…you’re moving right up the list.

  16. VERY WELL SAID AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND! BUT WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS TO MORONS YOU WILL NEVER GET IT THROUGH THEIR THE THICK HEADS!! THEY ARE ASSHOLES ANYWAY!! DON’T WASTE YOUR BREATH ON THEM, THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT!!!

  17. I do not understand why they took the men off the routes they had been working for yrs.? They put different men on the routes and it has to take longer because they are unfamiliar with the streets that make up the route.

  18. Hey you asshole! Manzo is not the president of 456!!! Is you can read Eddie Doyle is the president of 456!!! OPEN YOUR EYES UP BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!!

  19. People just dont get it I guess…I agree however with the above poster that letting rats out in city haul was just plain immature. You cant get anything done acting like that. There is no slow down in Yonkers. Everyone is used to us running the routes, not taking breaks or lunch and going home when we are done. Well now, the garbage is heavier and the routes are impossible to do especially in south Yonkers. In addition, there are GPS devices in all of the trucks. That means if you are idle for any length of time, you better have an explanation. The union is telling us to work, not slow down…and NO I am not a “union clone”. I have disagreed many times with the union hence my opinion about the rats. Here is my formula on why one day a week garbage pickup cant work…when we had twice a week pickup, there were 28 trucks picking up about 25,000-40,000 lbs of garbage a day. So lets take the average of 30,000 lbs a day, times that by 28 trucks and that gives us 840,000 lbs or 420 tons of garbage a day being picked up in Yonkers. That is an average amount since there is more garbage on holiday weeks, but it averages out since there is only four days during those weeks. The 840,000lbs of garbage picked up leaves none behind, Yonkers is completly picked up. NOW with one day a week garbage we have 16 trucks doing the same (30,000lbs) of garbage a day. That gives us 480,000lbs or 240 tons of garbage picked up each day. As you can see, there is a difference of 360,000lbs of garbage not gettting picked up each day. That is no lie, just drive around for yourself and you can see what I mean. The city is reacting to this by adding more trucks each day up to 30 some days. They are depleting other depts everyday to man these trucks. In addition to that, they are giving parking tickets for violating street cleaning rules but there is no street cleaning being done because the men are lifing garbage. SO where is this plan working?

  20. Just wait till winter comes, not only wont garbage be picked up, but the snow wont be removed. Im sure secondary streets will see a plow maybe a week after the storm. You cant do the same job with 50 less employees. No I do not work for the city.

  21. I love these open letters, they are fun to read because they rare so full, of ell, garbage!
Give me a break. You people let rats out in the council chamber with young children present, and when the city has to pay to exterminate the building, you file a grievance because you don’t like the exterminator?
That takes nerve and people who are truly brain dead. It also does not exactly win the hearts and minds of Yonkers citizens.
In terms of garbage and recycling, we have had no pickup in a week and I am hardly alone. Even allowing that you are behind because of the routes staffing etc., people have gone from twice a week to perhaps a pick up once eve week and a half or two weeks. The numbers don’t jive.
There see too many reports from ordinary citizens of garbagemen sitting around doing nothing, and from what is being reported on News 12 the trucks are bring followed and there is a lot of go slow being observed.
Bottom line, you are not going to win the hearts, minds and noses of the Citizens of Yonkers with phony baloney statements, rats and grievances. Most of us have endured pay cuts, layoffs, no pensions or healthcare, so shut your mouths and pick up the damn garbage.
We are tired of the unions.
    Bring in the control board.

  22. DPW Boss finally speaks!
    Congratulations!
    where have ya been!
    Thank God you said something.
My garbage is piling up and i was afraid you got mobbed up and were blowing a bunch of money somewhere in Nevada.
sorry— just a bad garbage joke based on stereotypes perpetuated by Hollywood.
i understand your boys can’t strike, walk off or slow down…apparently the Taylor law comes into play
So Amicone threw you a fast curve on the outside in a baseball stadium that was never built?
    Geeze I’m sorry for that.
    crooked? yeah crooked as hell
but don’t fault him for being more clever than you
you bought it hook sink and line.
And he put you in a hostage situation
    That happens sometimes.
you should have been here a few years ago when he was trying to sell that silly SFC project!
Oh Man you would have laughed at this plan!
Seriously: I say walk off anyway.
what do you have to lose…
show these bastards who is boss!
you can sit here and wait for McDow to save the day
or maybe wait for a control board
it will be here soon— don’t you worry.

  23. Nice try my man but no good.
I personally heard that white trash embarassment to Italians Manzo laugh as he told someone, ” Don’t put out your garbage cuz the guys ain’t coming to get it, but if it gets bad, call me and i will have a truck come by your house.”
This is 100 percent a job action and by trying to lie about it you are just insulting the tax payers even more !
I don’t in any way agree with what the city is doing but you guys need to smarten up and clean your own house first. Your union is a mess, your own guys hate the leadership of your union.
The way you guys acted at city hall, I mean we all know that you guys aren’t the smartest but still your actions were juvenile and not called for.
Your purposes would be better served by electing a president of 456 who has a cleaner image and isn’t as hated as the manzo family is. The manzos have been crooks and thieves for generations and that continues today…. use your heads guys !!!
