A line has been drawn in the sand. Over the years Local 456, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, has negotiated in good faith with Mayor Phil Amicone and his administration. We have never turned our backs on any negotiated agreement. The fact is that the Teamsters have given back to keep brother Teamsters working and to maintain the service that Yonkers taxpayers deserve and have always received from our members.
The Amicone Administration has turned its back on both the Teamster Union and the taxpayers of the City of Yonkers, leaving a string of broken promises.
Despite the fact that Teamster employees mad substantial monetary sacrifices to help the City last year, the Amicone Administration is making false and unsubstantiated accusations against union members, blaming them for the pile up of garbage on the streets. However, it is the system imposed by the Amicone Administration that has caused the problem. The system does not work. The change to one day per week pick up instead of two, increases the lengths of the routes, and a reduction in staff by fifty-four (54) employees resulted in the garbage collection problem.
The workers are doing their jobs. Assistant Department of Public Works Commissioner and Sanitation Supervisors have been following Sanitation trucks to make sure they are at their assigned routes. No disciplinary action has been taken against the workers.
Local 456, I.B.T. stands by its members who are performing their assigned duties admirably under very adverse conditions.
Edward Boyle, Jr. is president of Local 456, International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
