Yonkers, NY, August 13, 2010 — On August 12, 2010 at 10:24 p.m. Yonkers Police responded to Public School #10 at 60 Hawthorne Avenue on a report of a burglary activation called in by the Sonitrol Alarm System. Police officers responded and set up a perimeter around the school. A short time later, police observed a male, later identified as Jayqun K. Shanklin, age 17 of 34 Prospect Street, exit the school via a side entrance door. Shanklin was detained while police, with the assistance of a custodian and a Yonkers Police K-9, searched the school. No other persons were found to be inside the school, however, police found the cafeteria area to be in disarray. Boxes and tables were found to be knocked over and milk containers were on the floor. The custodian informed the police that the cafeteria was in a neat and orderly condition when he left the school earlier in the day and that no one had permission to enter or remain in the school. Shanklin was placed under arrest and charged with Burglary 3rd degree and Criminal Mischief 4th degree.
On August 13, 2010 at 6:23 a.m. Yonkers Police responded to the area of 214 Buena Vista Avenue on a report of a person breaking into an automobile. Upon arrival officers located a 2003 Saturn Ion, and found the front passenger window to be shattered. Police located the registered owner who related that missing from the vehicle was a Black IPOD Nano with a white cord and purple earphones. The owner further related that a neighbor called and related that he observed a male Hispanic wearing a white tee shirt and jeans break into the vehicle and remove property from inside same. The male was last seen walking toward the dead end of Buena Vista Ave by O’Boyle Park. Officers broadcasted a description, and a male fitting that description was stopped at Hawthorne Avenue and Morris Street. The male – identified as Marco Mercado, d.o.b. 2/7/87 of 187 Camp Rd., Meridan Ct., was identified by the witness and placed under arrest. Mercado was found to be in possession of a black IPOD Nano with a white cord and purple earphones, and a gold colored center punch with a silver tip. Mercado was charged with Criminal Mischief 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th degree and Possession of Burglar’s Tools.
On July 22, 2010 Yonkers Police investigated a residential burglary that occurred at 3 Cottage Place Gardens. Taken were a 15 inch Coby television, Play station 1 and Play station 2, an E-machine computer, and credit cards.
As of this date (August 10, 2010) Yonkers Detectives have arrested and charged three individuals with Burglary 2nd degree in connection with the aforementioned burglary.
1) John Hamm, d.o.b. 2/18/92 – arrested 8/7/10
2) Shaila Alexander d.o.b. 5/26/90 – arrested 8/9/10
3) Jalisa Allen d.o.b. 6/16/89 – arrested 8/10/10
The arrests were made by Detectives Hector Cartagena, Marvin Oakley, George Farrell and Scott Griffith.
