Anywhere you go in America today, you will find statues and plaques in honor of those brave citizens who gave their lives in military service.
You’ll find these memorials in every small town and large city, mentioning places like Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Kettle Hill, St. Mihiel, Palau, Normandy, Inchon, Hue, Rumaila, Tora Bora, Fallujah.
Often you’ll see a list of names of the brave fallen.
But none of these plaques or statues — or all of them together — can truly convey what these brave Americans accomplished.
Their real memorial is all around us, because America and its freedoms are an idea.
And those who gave their lives in service to our country have kept that dream alive.
Today, we salute them and their families, and say humbly say, “Thank you.”
