Vietnam-memorial Anywhere you go in America today, you will find statues and plaques in honor of those brave citizens who gave their lives in military service.

You’ll find these memorials in every small town and large city, mentioning places like Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Kettle Hill, St. Mihiel, Palau, Normandy, Inchon, Hue, Rumaila, Tora Bora, Fallujah.

Often you’ll see a list of names of the brave fallen.

But none of these plaques or statues — or all of them together — can truly convey what these brave Americans accomplished.

Their real memorial is all around us, because America and its freedoms are an idea.

And those who gave their lives in service to our country have kept that dream alive.

Today, we salute them and their families, and say humbly say, “Thank you.”

John Murtagh is the Yonkers City Council Minority Leader and the endorsed Republican candidate for Mayor of Yonkers.

  1. Anon – you outdo yourself on this post.
You quote a fictional dialogue from a satirical FICTIONAL piece by the conservative humorist John Semmens. Of course this is par for Republicans (like FOX NEWS) who have cited articles from the Onion as if they are real in an attempt to demean Obama and Biden. It shows how dishonest you and your ilk are. Remember that criticism of Bush 43 was called treasonous.
You also assume that Obama is one of my favorite people. I have no idea where you have gotten that idea. I think he has been a weak president and have not praised him since he was inaugurated. I have written how absurd it was that Republicans blamed him for the economy after the election and before he took office but your assumption is as misguided as your politics.
And what I said about how Republicans treat veterans is absolutely accurate. Under Bush 43, the VA fell into disrepair. Look at what happened under Jim Nicholson (the heckuva job Brownie) of the VA.

  2. Here is quote from one of your favorite people: “Look its an all volunteer force” “Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice. “I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country.” He goes on to deride the military as “whiners for objecting to a proposal to bill their private health insurance plans for treatment of battlefield injuries-you know about battlefield injuries right Dorkster.? This is quote from President B. Obama.

  3. And every chance Republicans get, they cut services to Veterans. That is your party Mr. Murtagh.
It’s actions not words that tell what a man is made of and you have sold your soul to the very people who have stolen Yonkers blind.
What a sham to use a day like this to spout such hypocrisy.

  4. And many of those veterans have come home and served as civil servants with distinguished careers mostly Polcie and Fire, many still serve in the auxiliaries today. Now you demonize them every chance you get you obnoxious pompous buffoon. How about going after welfare?

  5. “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” Samuel Johnson. Stop peddling this crap and tell us whether you are going to vote to increase our property taxes.
Please also tell us how your going to fix Yonkers.
Keep the flag waving pandering to yourself.
Which area of the military did you serve in? Texas Air National Guard?

  6. what happened, John. Did Richie beat you to a Memorial Dedication – one which you never issued in your entire time on the city council! Ugh to you, once again.
