YFD patch

Yonkers Fire Local 628The Yonkers Firefighters of IAFF Local 628 are in the final 24 hours of a petition drive requesting members of the public to sign petitions calling on Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and City Councilmembers to prevent the proposed cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department.

The Yonkers City Council is in the process of reviewing Mayor Mike Spano's proposed 2012-2013 Budget.  That budget calls for million of dollars of cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department's budget, a Department that has already been cut several times in the past few years of this yearly Yonkers budget crisis.  Mayor Spano's proposed budget for the Fire Department will result in:

The CLOSURE of at least 2 Fire Companies in the City of Yonkers (more than 11% of the entire Yonkers Fire Department);

The ELIMINATION of the Yonkers Fire Department's Fire Responder (EMS) Program (meaning that the YFD will no longer be responding to Emergency Medical Calls within 4 – 6 minutes within which the brain damage and death will occur in a cardiac patient – instead Yonkers will rely on a for-profit private ambulance company to respond within ??? minutes (also known as the chain of survival – with each minute that passes by without medical care, a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival decreases by 10%);

The REDUCTION of the number of Firefighters available to respond to respond to FIRES, RESCUES, AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS, HAZ-MAT INCIDENTS, ELECTRICAL EMERGENCIES, WATER EMERGENCIES, and numerous other emergency calls;

A significant INCREASE in RESPONSE TIMES for Fire Department personnel to arrive at a call for help;

A INCREASE in TAXES but a REDUCTION IN LIFE SAVING FIRE DEPARTMENT SERVICES; and

A VIOLATION of UNION CONTRACT PROVISIONS that have been in place for decades and provided the City with the best Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services response in the County of Westchester, if not the State of New York.

Off-duty Yonkers Fire Department Firefighters and Fire Officers have been collecting signatures on petitions since last Wednesday.  Since then, despite having less than a week to do so and despite the Holiday weekend, several thousand Yonkers citizens have signed their names asking that the cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department be stopped.  Numerous citizens have also expressed their outrage and have pledged to come speak at the City Council's Public Budget Hearing at 7:00 pm Tuesday May 29, 2012 in the City Council Chambers on the 4th floor of City Hall.  Expected to speak are several people who would not be alive or who's family member would not be alive today if it were not for the work of the Yonkers Fire Department and its Firefighters.

Petition drives are on-going at numerous locations, including STOP & SHOP in Cross County, WALGREENS on Nepperhan Avenue, WALGREENS on Yonkers Avenue, SHOPRITE on Tuckahoe Road, and SHOPRITE on Riverdale Avenue.

The petition drive will continues until 6:00 pm on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 and the petitions will be delivered to the City Council at their public hearing that same evening.

eHeziPETITION: Stop the Cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department By BARRY McGOEY

Comments 90

  1. TOXIC TRAIN SAFETY – A First Responders Petition caused The Chlorine Institute to conduct a five-month study comparing the safety of secondary containment to the chlorine “C”-Kit for chlorine tank cars. The study proved secondary containment to be, by far, the safest technology for containing and preventing releases of chlorine gas. To see secondary containment – search “CHLORTANKER.”

  2. HazMat Experts and Firefighters petition Dow Chemical and Union Pacific for safe rail tank cars transporting gas chlorine. Secondary containment is a necessary improvement that must be implemented. See–PETITION C KIT for First Responders Comments.

  3. YFD has turned into YFB, Yonkers Fire Bullies. You commercials are way over-board. Make the necessary cuts, make room for the new guys and lower property taxes. I’m tired of paying $10k for my 1300 sq. ft. 60 x 100

  4. There are some “rules ” in place for sick leave but they are very well defined..almost giving the FF a template of how they can abuse the system without raising a red flag against themselves…..but for one thing..the last doctor “in charge” of the FF sick leave was extremely horrible from the standpoint of monitoring it and calling people on the table.
Plus at times..it is VERY subjective..if a certain person…(cough brother) or the like is on sick..depending on how he gets/ or got along with the current administrative regime there is a wink and a nod to back off when it comes to that person. The rules are very SUBJECTIVE….BTW..I am speaking from a FF standpoint, but I am pretty sure many DPW morons and police abuse it also (every cop that gets a fender bender sues for a disaability back injury)

  5. I keep saying I am a FF to show I have an objective view and am not skewed like alot of people are for whatever side they want to bring out.

  6. We don’t have to live with it for four years. We will alert US Attoeney Preet Bahara about all his illegal activities.

  7. Dont the FF have a system in place to monitor sick time usage or abuse? Dont they have to be home during their scheduled work tour? Dont they have to report to a fire surgeon? Doesnt anybody check on the so called abusers of the system? Are they prohibited from working overtime if they are chronic sick? Sounds like nobody is watching the store here. I have a friend who works for the YPD, and he tells me they have some pretty restrictive guidelines for going out sick.

  8. Why do you keep repeating that you are a FF “Jim”? Are you trying to convince the readers or yourself? Nice try though.

  9. LIe I said, speaking from a FF standpoint..the FF should get the officers sick incentive program…instead of unlimited sick leave, which has basically just become a VERY easy avenue for members to take off, if the legitimately cannot mutual off a shift. This would probably cut OT at least one thrid..maybe half. Unlimited sick leave was originally a good thing to protect members from losing money or job if they get hurt on job (or even off the job). But now, with a combination of the ease of which it is to go on sick leave and the lack of work ethic with a good portion of the men..it is ruining the job.

  10. its nice to see the morons argue. now the taxpayers know exactly who our corrupt politicians are and who our not so civil servants are.
Carry on all you greedy corrupt pigs

  11. Hmmmm… Where do you think…? Ridge Hill…? Now that’s a lot of concrete…!!! I have an idea… Let’s destroy a parking lot that generates income… Turn it into a river walk… Or whatever the hell that’s supposed to be… Then we’ll build another parking structure… Mortgage it from the builder who we just gave the lot to for a $1.00… Thats right… One Dollar…!!! On paper anyway… 😉 And we’ll raise property taxes to pay for it… Residential property taxes that is… Not the businesses that have Been deferring their taxes for 10 years or more… That’s the city of Yonkers…

  12. Hmmmm… Save yourselves by scabbing the other departments work… Now that’s savvy… Makes sense now that I think about it.. A union leader who had nothing to say on News 12 Newsmakers… Let Barry talk for him… Basically just stood there looking like Jaba The Hut… Probably knew what was going on back then… That they would give nothing up… But that’s par for the course from a Dept. that basically took advantage of the whole NYS pension system single handedly… Not to mention one another… I wouldn’t be surprised if they started picking up garbage… On OT of course…

  13. Nothing to negotiate… Nothing to give back… Bare bones… @ the minimum… Note the proper use of the “@” symbol… For those of us who actually graduated from a Yonkers high school…

  14. How can anyone stand for that???? Stand for Olson understanding the city’s problems? Stand for him coming up with ideas to SAVE his members? For being reasonable in these hard times, how could anyone stand for that. Keep up the good work Keith!!!!!

  15. Just to correct you on one point. Yonkers pays a certain amount per employee to NYS pension fund. Payments to retired government employes are paid out from dividends, intrest earned on investments and so on and so forth. NYS pension system is solvent to the point that some cities didn’t even have to contribute for years. Please read up on the NYS government website. The facts will be more accurate than the misrepresentations that have become all too common. That being said, money from the state is used to pay salaries of city employees, as well as to fund various programs throughout the city. Are we so naieve as taxpayers and citizens to believe that empire city alone could not keep this city running like a clock. Not to mention Stew Leonard’s, XTO, Cross County… Shall I go on…?!?

  16. Why was it that it was only the firemen, teachers and DPW at last night’s meeting crying the blues, hat in hand?
I thought there were proposed cuts to the Police Department as well?
Something doesn’t smell right. Spano must have cut a deal with them for them to all keep their jobs while he only cuts in the other departments. How can anyone stand for that?

  17. Everyone on this site seems to forgot that the Mayor Spano just came into office this past January 2012. Mayor Amicone and his adminitration made sure that the new Mayor was left with a mess right from the start. Ask Pagone and all the rest of the friends and family how much vacation and sick time pay they walked away with even though there is a cap of 55 vacation days and nothing for left over sick time. Amicone was given this City away for years and it wasn’t to the Unions.

  18. At least you’re one of the smart ones. I would estimate that 95% of your local bought into his BS though.
Just goes to show you the level of intelligence on some of them. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or even a high school graduate, to have seen Mike’s plot from the start of his campaign. That’s actually funny because Mike only has a high school degree so it truly wouldn’t take a lot of intelligence on anyone’s part to avoid being outwitted by his unintelligent self.
But in all honesty I do appreciate the FF’s like you and the few (and I know they are very few) who take their jobs seriously and aren’t out there to scam the city.
To hell with the rest of them. They should all be thrown in a jail cell with Nicky, Mikey, Jereis and Kathy Spring Spencer. They’d all get along famously.

  19. The city council doesnt have the balls to institute this. I am willing to wager that they go ahead with the mayors budget with a few minor tweaks. The taxpayers are going to get screwed and the unions will just rake in more overtime.

  20. Jim is right ALL Departments should
take a 10% reduction in pay. The
Board of Education should also be
    involved in this cut.This, along
    with consolidation of departments
would go a long way to reduce the
    deficit.

  21. Why does everything always the FF fault ? at least when they do work they are risking their lives…unlike the DPW, teachers etc..they hardly work AND THEY ARE NOT RISKING THEIR LIVES just like people say what the hell is the difference if Empress does the job…? what the hell difference is it if you have 5 more kids in a class..? its a waste of money in certain schools anyway, school is just a 6 hour break before they start playing video games and hanging out on the street corner…

  22. The point is McFly the FF have not held a gun to the city’s head or gotten any crazy contracts but EVERYONE blames them for every woe the city has…..if you want to say thereis “fat” there..then there is fat everywhere across the board…..if FF are overpaid..arent the cops overpaid ?, the teachers, the parking bureau do nothings..the MIS dept the water dept and especially the grandaddy of them all 456….some people are doing GREAT.but alot more of guys are not just like Joe Blow Yonkersite

  23. If you have not had a negotiated contract in seven (7) yrs., it is proof that you have been over paid. You all seem to be doing OK, so what’s your beef.

  24. Make signs in SPANISH not ENGLISH in front of houses this is part of MEXICO not like PUTNAM OR DUCTHESS where you live.

  25. You say UNION CONTRACTS have gotten out of hand…there has not been an FD negotiated contract in 6 to 7 years…..what it is now is what it was in 2007…..you want to cut..cut a certain percentage ALL ACROSS THE BOARD..from BOE,Parking bureau, YPD , YFD, 456 , ADMINISTRATION, WATER DEPT, MIS, PARKS DEPT, OFFICE FOR AGING, HOUSING, EVERYONE NOONE CAN BITCH THEN

  26. Again they could solve alot of this simply by making the FF go to the officers sick incentive plan..would cut Ot probably by half

  27. Why? Spano only got in because of the crroked shenanigans exhibited through the years by him and all his family predecessors..they are a bunch of crooks..plain and simple….

  28. You have every right to state your opinion about the job the mayor is doing, but please keep his family out of this discussion.

  29. Im a FF and did not pay the Mikey extortion money of 100 bucks…I knew he would screw us..just as everyone before…I think they should bust the balls of the sick leave abusers and the scumbags that have their only mission in life to build a file to get disability..I say screw them..but there are alot of good and well intentioned guys also that want to do the right thing

  30. Not sure if you are new to this site, but I just wanted to take a minute to descibe to you what is going on. It is not the YPD and the YFD responding to each other on this site. It is people pretending to be PD/FD to stir the pot. They are trying to make both agencies look like they are at odds. Nothing could be further from the truth. And I would also like to thank you sir for your service. Stay safe.

  31. Interesting how everyone is bashing the civil servants, but no one is saying anything
about little Mikey. Possibly facing indictment like bug brother Nick?
Oh poor Mikey, can’t even run his own city. He appointed a deputy mayor who
doesn’t even live in Yonkers, but is letting her call all the shots. No wonder Mary is fed up with him, he has no balls.

  32. If the yfd is so concerned about the safety of the citizens why don’t they give up the money they get as a stipend for being first responders.

  33. For years they have been consumed with racking up all the benefits they could get these dumb ass pols to give them. Now that the gravy train has come to a screeching halt they are suddenly concerned with the safety of the residence. The same goes for these teachers. Every budget they suddenly become concerned with the “children.” Anyone who has to use Vinny Restiano as a model of responsible government should just realize it’s over and throw in the towel.

  34. some people continue to be selfish. the real issue is not safety it is protecting the $200,000 @ year firefighters. they have the best contract in the state. firefighters put in less days than schoolteachers. stop crying and help the city (wish you guys lived here!!!)

  35. Here we go “AGAIN” folks. Yonkers wanting to elliminate 2 fire companies (we all know what this will be. Ellimination of Engine 307 and Ladder 70. Squad 11 would be moved to Station 7; the City would then close Station 11; Tower Ladder 75 will be moved to Station 14 [although everyone knows that it makes more sense, if you are going to do this, to move it to Station 11, rather than closing Station 11 all together]. THEN you have the totally insane concept of elliminating the First Responder Program. I would bet that all of our AGING citizens in Yonkers would NEVER agree to that one. Crime is out of hand in Yonkers and you want the POLICE to cover the Emergency Responder situations? Empress cannot handle it (nor could any private ambulance firm, unless you housed an Ambulance is each of the firehouses in the City). UNIONS CONTRACTS have gotten out of hand (especially with the Fire, Police and DPW contracts where MASSIVE OVERTIME during one’s last year on the job, factors into the amount of Pension one gets upon retirements). THAT’S WHERE THE FINANCIAL ISSUE IS WITHIN THE CITY (Yonkers is going BROKE having to contractually cover the Pensions agreed to). WAKE UP YONKERS !!!

  38. Empress lied through their teeth yesterday. They are still banking on someone bailing them out. And Joan brought up a good point; How come Empress was the only company asked to submit a proposal. ???????????

  39. Look at the line-up that the Yonkers fire union trotted out to testify on their behalf-a former COY Council President who could not pass a civil service exam, the head of the YFT who does live in Yonkers, a COY Fire Cmsr who scammed the COY before he retired, constant pre-hearsed testimony about Empress and how it always takes 15-20 minutes for them to arrive and finally the constant fear mongering rhetoric which the speakers never supported with concrete facts and data- nobody denies the dedication and hardwork of the YFD but their over the top played out budget time mantra is wearing very thin on the taxyayers-stop with the all about me mentality.

  40. They have been kissing up to these pols. for yrs. Remember they were Vinny Restiano’s private moving men. The hell with the taxpayers, you kiss mine and I’ll kiss yours. Now they claim that they are just concerned with the safety of the citizens.

  41. Why is everyone so negative to each other? All you get here are stupid back and forth arguments about firefighters this, cops that. You are supposed to be representing the City of Yonkers not acting like immature children. You are all the problem, plain and simple and you all need to grow up. If this is any indication as to the caliber of men and women we have here in Yonkers then I am deeply saddened. As a former Marine, Iraq veteran and National Guard soldier I am a firm believer in that when you out on a uniform, and swear an oath to protect you take on a responsibility to those you are serving and also become a representative of your country, city or town. Act accordingly and come together for the benefit of Yonkers and not yourselves. Without this city and those in it whose contributions go towards giving you a job you have nothing. Don’t lose focus on what it means to be a civil servant.

  42. Get a clue why don’t you practice what you preach or are you another one of those crybaby hairbags who can’t find their ass from their elbow but always talk a lot shit.

  43. Tell yourselves whatever you need to boys. You were the big tough foiafightas that bought into Savior Mike’s bullshit promises about keeping the gravy train going for another 4 years. Sorely mistaken!
    Played like a fiddle.
And I heard the same thing about there being no layoffs in YPD as the previous poster stated…that really has to sting even more! Apparently your best friend Mike prefers pigs to foiafightas. I could see why that is though, him and Fat Boy Nick both look like they’ve eaten enough bacon for a lifetime.
Your local is the laughing stock of the entire state right now. Hope you gets are ready to save face at tonight’s meeting. Can’t wait!

  44. I bet they want OVERTIME for sitting in front of the supermarket
.Thats the most time ever spent outside the house.Piss test is next

  45. I’m pretty sure the citizens of Yonkers elected Mayor Spano. However it sounds to me that you have a some misdirected animosity towards the YFD. You may benefit from anger management therapy. Perhaps someone should take away your gun and give you something to suck on!!!

  46. You boys got little Mikey elected so now you have to live with it. No one created this monster more than you.Thought you were all buddies but you got used by the Spano machine. Losers.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  47. Just heard from the insiders at city haul, that the mayor is planning a major crackdown in police overtime starting July 1st. No more hiring for private business or construction projects. It costs the city too much due to the extra vehicles required and extra money the city has to contribute to the pension system.

  48. In response to anyone who posts on this site without identifying yourself: “SHUT THE @$&% UP!!! Start by getting an education, or at least learning to spell. Then get your facts straight, and try to make your point without sounding like a bitter arrogant neanderthal. I’d love to see the change in your attitude when you actually need the help of a Police Officer or a Firefighter.

  49. It’s on life support.but obviously it’s not happening. With Capellis WP towers almost half vacant, and presumably more tenants fixing to leave,Yonkers maybe dodged a bullet here. With public and subsidized housing ringing the prposed aea in need, there will be no re-developement in downtown Yonkers in the foreseeable future. No shovels in the ground.

  50. i agree send in the DA for the piss tests too crybaby.Iwill call my council person to to help all of you out when i get 50,000 a year in overtime for cleaning my harley

  51. The FD has one person who failed the dole test , was fired and then was re-hired because he was a person of colour.

  52. I hope the scrawny Empress guys and girls are hitting the gym,if you think the cops are gonna help you carry your patients, your nuts

  53. FF negotiate in good faith and stop the fear mongering. 3 -4 fire trucks and 12-16 firefighters responding to a emergency call is a little over the top. FF and PD has anyone looked at all the people on extended medical leave, collecting full salary for no work.

  54. McPhooy is a thug with a tiny little prick Can’t wait for the Control Board to smash the bloated contracts and smash the bs work rules. Retire on your salary hen. BTW, take your vacation time and don’t stockpile and pretend yoou are on union biz

  55. Recently we had a medical emergency in my neighborhood and the fire department did not show up. Empress and YPD did and did a fine job. So despite the fear mongering, medical emergency services can be provided without the YFD.
I am also getting tired of McGooeys endless scare tactics. When all you have to convince people is to try and scare the crap out of them, well you really have nothing do you…
The YFD does a great job, but you do a lousy job representing their interests.

  56. Here’s a solution- piss test them and fire those who fail. That’ll take care of the problem. Stoopid foiafightas….

  57. Yeah, you’re too fucking stupid and lazy to pass the test, take the agility and pass, then get pass the screening requirements( includining criminal background checks, then finally pass the academy.
But that’s obviously not available to you even the last 5 tests have been heavily recruited to minority candidates. I guess we should just give yo the job because we aws is parts of a conspiracy. i says a special prosecutor shoud be looking here .

  58. What about the pending layoffs in the YPD? This city cant afford to layoff cops or firemen. Both depts are at a bare minimum. Cut the political no show jobs, the take home cars in the police/fire depts, cut the Board of Ed, excess overtime in both depts and there wont be a need for layoffs.

  59. Yonkers firefighters. What a bunch of cry babies. Eat and sleep in the firehouse most of the time. They Had ab out fifty real fires last year That was less than one a week And they average 120k a year to show up 2 days a week. Most of them live up north because they only have to commute twice a week and if they take a mutual with someone then they don’t have to show up for 2 weeks. When are they going to get it?
Now they are upset because the mayor is taking first responder from them. It is about time. It makes no sense to mobilize 4 to 12 fireman to respond with humongous fire rigs to respond to aided cases when an empress fly car or ambulance along with the ypd who are on patrol anyway can respond safer and faster. They are firefighters. That’s all. We have way too many at too high a cost to the taxpayers. The days of waste and fraud and greed in the fire dept are over. Wake up and smell the coffee…jerkoffs!

  60. Anyone know when tryouts are for the yonkers minor league baseball team?
Can’t wait until capelli builds that field of dreams minor league baseball field in south yonkers. What a great idea!
Is klein and sansone still parading around yonkers telling taxpayers this is still happening? Lmao

  61. OH theres go my new rental houses on SARATOGA ave.More time to go out in my boat or my new harley new pickup or i can just hang out at the house like always and we can show off all or toys to all the poor suckers that really live here in yonkers not like US

  62. Why should anyone be exempt? We must cut the budget pure and simple. I respect the jobs that yff s do but they must be reasonable

  63. People will die and others will lose their jobs, just so mikey can make room for his new friends. It’s going to be a sad day in Yonkers if this budget passes the way mike wants it to pass.

  64. Yeah I just found out I have the 5th pick in my fantasy football league. I am hoping to get Ray Rice, LeSean McCoy or Matt Forte with the 5th pick. Here are my top 50 rankings. I like it, you like it?

  65. It will be interesting to see who the Democrats run for State Committee next week as petitions start to be circulated. Patricia McDow has vacated her seat by moving outside of her district. Pauline Galvin will have to step down to become a member of the Civil Service Commission. Ken Jenkins was holding a spot when Tom Meier became ineligible but is now focused on his next race not the State Committee. I hear that it might be a “young dem: slate of Juanita Lewis, George Kevgas and Katherine Brezler.
