The Yonkers Firefighters of IAFF Local 628 are in the final 24 hours of a petition drive requesting members of the public to sign petitions calling on Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and City Councilmembers to prevent the proposed cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department.
The Yonkers City Council is in the process of reviewing Mayor Mike Spano's proposed 2012-2013 Budget. That budget calls for million of dollars of cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department's budget, a Department that has already been cut several times in the past few years of this yearly Yonkers budget crisis. Mayor Spano's proposed budget for the Fire Department will result in:
The CLOSURE of at least 2 Fire Companies in the City of Yonkers (more than 11% of the entire Yonkers Fire Department);
The ELIMINATION of the Yonkers Fire Department's Fire Responder (EMS) Program (meaning that the YFD will no longer be responding to Emergency Medical Calls within 4 – 6 minutes within which the brain damage and death will occur in a cardiac patient – instead Yonkers will rely on a for-profit private ambulance company to respond within ??? minutes (also known as the chain of survival – with each minute that passes by without medical care, a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival decreases by 10%);
The REDUCTION of the number of Firefighters available to respond to respond to FIRES, RESCUES, AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS, HAZ-MAT INCIDENTS, ELECTRICAL EMERGENCIES, WATER EMERGENCIES, and numerous other emergency calls;
A significant INCREASE in RESPONSE TIMES for Fire Department personnel to arrive at a call for help;
A INCREASE in TAXES but a REDUCTION IN LIFE SAVING FIRE DEPARTMENT SERVICES; and
A VIOLATION of UNION CONTRACT PROVISIONS that have been in place for decades and provided the City with the best Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services response in the County of Westchester, if not the State of New York.
Off-duty Yonkers Fire Department Firefighters and Fire Officers have been collecting signatures on petitions since last Wednesday. Since then, despite having less than a week to do so and despite the Holiday weekend, several thousand Yonkers citizens have signed their names asking that the cuts to the Yonkers Fire Department be stopped. Numerous citizens have also expressed their outrage and have pledged to come speak at the City Council's Public Budget Hearing at 7:00 pm Tuesday May 29, 2012 in the City Council Chambers on the 4th floor of City Hall. Expected to speak are several people who would not be alive or who's family member would not be alive today if it were not for the work of the Yonkers Fire Department and its Firefighters.
Petition drives are on-going at numerous locations, including STOP & SHOP in Cross County, WALGREENS on Nepperhan Avenue, WALGREENS on Yonkers Avenue, SHOPRITE on Tuckahoe Road, and SHOPRITE on Riverdale Avenue.
The petition drive will continues until 6:00 pm on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 and the petitions will be delivered to the City Council at their public hearing that same evening.
