YONKERS, NY – September 5, 2014 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced that New York State Assemblywmember Shelley Mayer has secured $6,000 in additional state funding to help support the 11 Boys and Girls Clubs that operate in the City of Yonkers. The additional funding, which will be directed to the Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, will be used in conjunction with the funding and services the City provides annually to support Little League, soccer, basketball, football, cheerleading and other youth activities provided by All Yonkers Youth, Bryn Mawr Boys and Girls Club, Colts Youth Club, Dunwoodie Youth Association, East Yonkers Boys and Girls Club, Hillcrest Lakers, Lud-Dale Association, McLean Heights, North Yonkers Boys and Girls Club, Pacoy and Pelton.

Athletics teach our children to be team players, leaders on and off the field, good sportsmen and the importance of fair play. Those are values that will serve our kids well throughout school, college and beyond,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Thanks to Assemblymember Shelley Mayer even more Yonkers kids will be able to participate in sports and other leadership-building activities offered by our Boys and Girls Clubs.”

Assemblymember Shelley Mayer said, “I am pleased that I was able to provide this funding to support the clubs that sponsor these great teams in Yonkers. Working together with the City, we can help provide our children the opportunity to participate in sports while they learn the important lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship.”

Eleven Boys and Girls Clubs currently operate throughout Yonkers, helping the City’s youth develop into responsible young adults while teaching children important leadership, health and life skills. Yonkers’ teams have enjoyed great success on the field. Hillcrest Lakers were crowned 2013 Little League State Champions, earning a chance to compete in the Little League World Series; North Yonkers Knights Football team went undefeated during the 2013 regular season; and East Yonkers Boys and Girls Clubs’ Crown Trophy team recently won the City Little League World Series.

“Yonkers Parks Department is proud to support many community organizations, including the City’s 11 Boys and Girls Clubs. Thanks to the support of Assemblymember Shelley Mayer, the Boys and Girls Club will be able to engage more youth,” said Commissioner Yvette Hartsfield, Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.
