BEDFORD, NY — JUNE 30, 2015 — Bedford Playhouse, Inc. announced today that they have signed a contract with Stephen Tilly Architects for the renovation of this historic theater.
Stephen Tilly Architects is a multi-disciplinary firm located in Dobbs Ferry, NY. “Our firm takes a collaborative, craftsman-like approach to a wide variety of projects. We listen carefully to clients; we respect traditions but look at each project freshly, and we are poised at the frontier of twenty-first century technology and design. Our mission is to design, rehabilitate and preserve environments that shelter and delight, and will continue to do so for generations,” said Stephen Tilly, principal.
John Farr, President of Bedford Playhouse commented: “We are thrilled to be working with Steve and his team. Early on, they provided the original design concept for the new Playhouse, which we used to sell the whole initiative to the community. From the beginning, it was important to us that the firm had experience with designing movie houses. We feel we’re in great hands.”
The firm’s cinema experience began with its conversion of a New York City bus barn into SOHO’s first movie theater, the Film Forum. Following that, Tilly’s firm designed a three screen facility for Film Forum on Houston Street which continues to set the pace for exhibitors of independent cinema after 24 years. Their work at Film Forum led to a collaboration with producer Donna Gigliotti and the design of a space for Red Shoes Productions, a joint project of Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, organized by Ms. Gigliotti. The space, situated on the fourth floor of Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film Center, was organized as a collaborative shared production space for smaller films.
The firm has also consulted for other non-profits with discriminating audiences, such as the Collective for Living Cinema and the Anthology Film Archives. In addition, they’ve worked with for-profit exhibitors like Galaxy Cinemas, which specializes in the financial and physical rejuvenation of existing facilities.
Tilly’s sixteen person firm is itself housed in a collection of buildings that served as the first movie theater in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and later became a legitimate theater, the Dobbs Ferry Playhouse. The firm has done a number of award-winning projects in Westchester, including the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains.
“We’ve found Stephen Tilly Architects to be innovative, collaborative and altogether great to work with.” said Sarah Long, Bedford Playhouse Board Chair. “We look forward to collaborating with them to ensure that the new Bedford Playhouse lives up to the high expectations we’ve set.
