YONKERS, NY – August 18, 2015 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the City of Yonkers will host the 90th Yonkers Marathon presented by St. John’s Riverside Hospital on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 8:00AM. The celebration will include a half marathon, inaugural 5K course as well as an all new course for the marathon, traversing the city.

“Each year the Yonkers Marathon continues to grow and establish itself as a prominent event in the region,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “This year we celebrate the rich history of our city with the 90th running of the marathon by taking the course to the city’s four corners, visiting our different neighborhoods. I encourage residents to come out and support our runners and celebrate the history of the Yonkers Marathon.”

Race producer NYCRUNS will celebrate the milestone and usher in a new golden era of the race with the introduction of a new single-loop marathon course. The courses will be USATF certified and the marathon will be a Boston Marathon qualifier. The races are co-produced by the City of Yonkers.

“The new course maintains everything that made the old, double-loop course great, “ says NYCRUNS owner Steve Lastoe, “But a single loop eliminates repetition and makes for a more compelling run. If you’ve run this race before, you’ll want to come race again, and if you haven’t experienced the Yonkers Marathon before, now is the time to do it.”

The Yonkers Marathon is consistently ranked high on running sites, such as MarathonGuide, and has a long and storied history. It was once home of the national championships and Olympic team qualifiers. Marathon legend John Kelley called it a “Marathoner’s marathon,” and New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow cited it as one his favorite marathons, stating, “You haven’t run a marathon until you’ve run Yonkers.”

In addition to the marathon, there will be the popular half marathon race and, this year, there will be the debut of a new 5K course that will allow runners of all ages and abilities to participate in the anniversary celebration. After the races, an expanded post-race festival centered around Van de Donck Park will be open to runners, families and friends.

The first Yonkers Marathon was held on Thanksgiving Day 1907 and is the world’s second oldest marathon after the Boston Marathon.

Registration for all races is open now at www.nycruns.com. For more information, please contact theteam@nycruns.com or 917.482.4401.
