Throughout his career in Congress, Congressman Engel has been a committed supporter of medical research. He is currently co-chair of the House Tuberculosis Elimination Caucus, the House Asthma and Allergy Caucus, and the House Fragile X Caucus. He is also a member of the House Rare Disease Caucus, the House Autism Caucus, the House Diabetes Caucus and the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s.

WASHINGTON, DC — May 31, 2017 — Congressman Eliot L. Engel, the Ranking Member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a top Member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump signaling he will pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement:

“I am deeply disappointed that President Trump has decided to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement, the most comprehensive global climate agreement in history. This shortsighted decision threatens to unravel the entire agreement, imperiling the planet and further straining relations with our allies.

Climate change is a global crisis that demands American leadership. What does it say when the President of the United States abdicates that responsibility, brazenly ignoring facts and evidence? Whether the President or his Administration want to admit it, climate change is real, driven by human activity, and cannot be ignored.

“We have a moral obligation to our children and our grandchildren, and to ourselves. This is not a future problem; we are already seeing the effects of our changing climate through excess flooding, stronger storm systems, erratic weather patterns, and extreme drought. We cannot put our heads back in the sand, recklessly consuming fossil fuels while expanding our carbon footprint. We must refocus our energy sector on cheap, renewable sources of fuel before climate change gets even worse.”

  1. The USA now joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries in the world to opt out of the Paris Agreement (Nicaragua opted out because they wanted a STRONGER agreement).

Even North Korea is a signatory.

And guess who will step into the green energy sector and snap up the global billions in profits and jobs? China.

The USA is fast becoming a pariah state and a general laughing stock of the world.

    1. It always has been the laughing stock of the world, only the media here present only the administration side of any story, hence the bubble effect.
It’s been third world in education and infrastructure for many decades. You only see this when you travel abroad.

    2. So Obama joined this treaty for corporate greed. Thanks it all makes sense now. Hillary receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars for dumb speeches on Wall Street. Obama doing the same. The establishment politicians need to go starting with Engel. Drain the swamp! By the way, America will never loose out on innovation and will always be competitive if a buck is to be made. It’s called capitalism. What Obama wants to do redistribute jobs and wealth to foreign countries and put us at disadvantage. If anyone reading this lives in Engels district, please vote this guy out.
