Social Media Series: Third Article of Five. 

Gail Farrelly grew up in The Bronx and now resides in Bronxville, NY. Having a doctorate in accounting from George Washington University, she’s taught in several universities and published numerous articles in business and academic journals. Learning about the murderous politics of academic life turned her mind to crime. The fictional kind, of course! Her first mystery, “Beaned In Boston,” in which a lecherous professor perishes even though he was well published, was named to the Washington Irving Book Selection List. Her short story, “Even Steven,” was nominated for a Derringer Award. Gail writes spoofs for the Yonkers Tribune Webaper,, and for a British website, Gail shares a website,, with her sister Rita, also a mystery writer.

Big Brother Is Watching Too Much, Way Too Much By GAIL FARRELLY

He’s seen it all, and he’s sick of it. 

The beleaguered watchdog is having trouble keeping up with the amount of work he’s been assigned and admits it may be time for him to quit his spying job. The number of folks he’s supposed to keep track of increases daily, and he’s been given no additional resources. The expansion of social media is NOT good news for big brother.

He’s told friends, “Okay, it used to be Big Brother is watching. A difficult job but do-able. Now it’s Big Brother is watching, listening, recording, reading, reporting, and so on. It’s gotten completely out of hand.” He went on to say that years ago each surveillance subject had one phone and one computer; but now, each one has multiple phones and several computers so the workload has skyrocketed. “My salary hasn’t skyrocketed accordingly,” Big Brother whines. 

His friends are worried. He’s under so much pressure and barely has time to eat or sleep. And while he’s making a decent salary, he gets no pay at all for overtime.

He was sent to a psychiatrist for stress counseling but it didn’t work out as planned. According to Big Brother, “That doc was on my watch list and going under her care would definitely have been a conflict of interest for me. No can do.” 

So here’s the question: Who will watch Big Brother as he does his watching?
