IRONDEQUOIT, NY — May 12, 2018 — Surrounded at the Irondequoit Public Library by family, friends and local leaders, Jamie Romeo today officially announced her candidacy for State Assembly for the 136th District. The seat, which encompasses the towns of Irondequoit and Brighton, as well as portions of the City of Rochester, has been represented for nearly three decades by Joe Morelle, who is running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.
“As a proud lifelong resident of this area, I have long recognized the value of public service, even as a young girl organizing clean-ups of Durand Eastman Beach,” said Romeo. “Joe Morelle has fought so hard for the people of this district, and I would be honored to continue his legacy of putting constituents first. I pledge to go to Albany to ensure our schools have the funding they need, that we are creating quality, sustainable jobs, and that progressive values continue to be embraced by state government.”
No stranger to government service, Romeo spent nearly a decade working in Monroe County working for the Democratic minority, and was Chief of Staff to former State Senator Ted O’Brien. For the past three years, she has served as Chair of the Monroe County Democratic Committee.
“It has been a true joy to serve in the New York State Assembly and while it’s bittersweet to leave, I can think of no one better to take up the torch and go to work for our hardworking families than Jamie Romeo,” said Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle. “Jamie joins the ranks of the many strong, passionate women stepping up to lead all across the country and our community is undoubtedly better for it. She will be the leader we need fighting to create a brighter future for all New Yorkers.”
“With her compassion for families and her understanding of the issues that affect our neighbors, Jamie Romeo will bring experience to the New York State Assembly,” said Assemblymember Harry Bronson. “As a member of the County Legislature, I had the pleasure of working with Jamie and know her dedication to improving the lives of all citizens, her ability to listen to their concerns, and her commitment to creating opportunities for all. I am proud to stand with her today and look forward to partnering with her tomorrow as a member of the Rochester delegation.”
Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren added “As former chief of staff to Senator Ted O’Brien and Chair of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, Jamie Romeo has developed the relationships and skill sets that I know will help us provide more jobs, safer more vibrant neighborhoods, and better educational opportunities for all of our residents as our next Assemblywoman. I look forward to working with Jamie in Albany to further revitalize our great City.”
“Now, more than ever, we need strong leadership at all levels of government. I have worked with Jamie Romeo for well over a decade, and am confident that she will fight tirelessly for the people of this region in the State Capitol,” said Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello. “She brings the passion and experience we need to ensure that we continue to get out fair share from Albany and that the best interests of local taxpayers are protected.”
“Over the past several years in Irondequoit, we have seen a number of young elected officials step up to serve their community. I am thrilled that Jamie Romeo has joined the ranks of the next generation, bringing a voice to their government,” said Irondequoit Supervisor Dave Seeley. “There has been no better partner to Irondequoit Town Hall than Joe Morelle, however, I am deeply confident Jamie will bring our needs to Albany and continue fighting for working families in Irondequoit.”
“Jamie Romeo has years of experience in working with officials at different levels of government. Jamie is a strong capable woman and I know she will be a strong partner for Brighton in Albany. I’m proud to support Jamie Romeo for State Assembly.” said Brighton Supervisor Bill Moehle.
Romeo is a lifelong resident of Irondequoit. She is a proud mother to Dominic, a student in West Irondequoit schools. Romeo has secured the designation of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, having garnered overwhelming support from the several local committees that comprise the 136th Assembly District.
