LISBON, PORTUGAL — May 12, 2018 — Israeli Singer Netta Barzilai captivates Eurovision to win with #MeToo inspired lyrics of her songtrack “Toy”. Infused with the refrain, “I am not your toy, you stupid boy”, the lyrics evoke a summation of the #MeToo issues women have expressed in the growing global movement against gender inequality, sexual abuse, and harassment. “Toy” is the very definition of 21st Century zeitgeist.”
After Barzilai’s win was announced and she returned to the stage to accept her prize she said, “l am so happy. Thank you so much. Thank you for supporting diversity.”
Portugal was host for the first time to the annual Eurovision contest. it was held at the Altice Arena, also referred to as Pavilhão Atlântico. The multi-purpose indoor arena in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The arena is among the largest indoor arenas in the European Union and the largest in Portugal with a capacity of 20,000 people and was built in 1998 for Expo ’98.
Netta Barzilai is 25-years-old. She is a former singer in the Israeli Navy band. Barzilai’s win is Israel’s fourth.
Perhaps Eurovision will be held “next year in Jerusalem!”
