YONKERS, NY — October 15, 2018 — The boiler at Martin Luther King School began to smoke and is now totally out of commission. Not a peep from Yonkers Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada nor from Yonkers Board of Education Trustee President Rev. Steve Lopez. Their silence, as well as that from Yonkers City Hall is deafening. Yonkersites have yet to get a complete report on Paideia School 15 of Yonkers. Tuesday is expected to be one of the coldest days this year and there will not be any heat at MLK. Will the students and teachers, and school workers need to wear a heavy sweater and winter coats to bear the cold? How long before the City of Yonkers divulges the problem and then how long it will Tak to remedy and how much it will cost? Martin Luther King School remained open despite the boiler breakdown.

It seems the politicos are quick to remain silent. Each is engaged in getting out the vote while they believe their responsibility to be cheerleaders who refuse to own up to the reality that is. Dr. Quezada has said that the Yonkers Public School District is adept at stealing from Peter to pay Paul. Dr. Quezada has failed in every way imaginable including faltering at his modus opera Di, that is, stealing from Peter to pay Paul.

One does not have to strain their neck to hear crickets chirping, and kids’ teeth chattering because of the cold. What will a new boiler cost? When will it be replaced or fixed? Who is responsible to scrutinize the maintenance and upkeep of each school? Where are the reports?

Yonkers Tribune is still awaiting a response from the Yonkers Board of Education (YBoE) after it initially received a confirmation of receiving our F.O.I.L. request. We do not expect an answer at the rate they are responding. The YBoE is deleterious in its conduct, and has abrogated its responsibility to students, teachers, and ancillary working staff for not maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy environment to both teach and learn.

  1. I heard there was lots of smoke and luckily the explosion happened after hours on Friday. I wonder how much it’s costing to replace boiler, I hear Quoozada said to patch up the hole in system and would rather not replace under his watch. He knows days as Supt Quoozada in YPS are short lived. Change is good and on the horizon.

  2. It is not fully winter yet and boiler problems smoking and failing to provide heat is a huge problem. It’s just the beginning folks.
