NEW YORK, NY — November 29, 2018 — Family-led Country Bank in New York was recognized for its generous support of the oldest and largest Irish-American organization in the U.S. at the group’s annual awards ceremony on November 18th in Yonkers. More than 130 members of the New York-Irish community came together at the Bronx County Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) event. Ten members of the Murphy family and staff of Country Bank were on hand for the prestigious presentation of Celtic Harps acknowledging a continued commitment to the social values and causes the organization supports.

“It was an extraordinary honor to accept this award on behalf of Country Bank,” said Joseph Murphy, Jr., President and CEO of Country Bank. “The Ancient Order of the Hibernians is an organization near and dear to the Murphy family, both personally and professionally.”

Murphy notes the bank takes great pride in its Irish roots, as well as its participation in the AOH that has been a valued customer of the bank for many years. This year, Country Bank presented the AOH with a $2,300 donation to support the organization’s community efforts.

This year’s dinner dance was dedicated to the Ballymurphy Massacre Campaign for Justice, a campaign based in Ireland seeking justice for eleven Irish civilians who were killed in 1971. Special recognition was given to lead activist Carmel Quinn, sister of one of the victims, John Laverty, who will begin a five state American tour as the Inquest opens in Belfast.

In addition to Country Bank’s Murphy family, honorees included Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, Ray O’Hanlon – Editor of the Irish Echo, and Taryn Duffy – VP of Communications at Empire City Casino.  Guests at the dinner and dance held at Rory Dolan’s restaurant enjoyed music provided by the Kitty Kelly Band.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians in America was established in New York City in 1836. Nearly two centuries later, the Bronx County chapter maintains an active presence within the Irish-American Catholic community. Chapter leaders organize and promote support for social causes that directly impact people of Irish heritage, such as denouncing harmful or negative Irish stereotypes in the media, calling for fair immigration policy or seeking justice for the wrongly accused. The organization maintains and teaches the next generation traditional Irish values and customs that otherwise would be lost.
