Fatality of Ida Martinez of 131 Park Avenue Investigated by Yonkers Police

YONKERS, NY – December 4, 2018 — The Yonkers Police Department (YPD) responded to 131 Park Avenue, a one-story mixed use building with a dental office and residential apartment, at approximately 8:51am to assist the Yonkers Fire Department (YFD) regarding a report of a structure fire at a one-story building. Upon arrival, Police Officers engaged in traffic and crowd control protocol while the fire operation was tackled by the YFD. It was a neighbor at 127 Park Ave who first saw smoke coming from the basement apartment at building next door at 131 Park and called the Yonkers Fire Department.

Another resident at 131 park Ave was able to open the door of the basement apartment in an attempt to assist the elderly female resident. He was pushed back by the heavy smoke. It was the first arriving fire company who removed the female from the apartment. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Unfortunately, despite rescue efforts, it has been confirmed that she has passed away.
The fire was extinguished and declared under control at 9:14 AM. The fire was held at one alarm with 44 Firefighters in attendance at the scene. One Firefighter suffered an injury.
Detectives from Yonkers Police Fire Investigation Unit, and the Major Case Unit In collaboration with the Yonkers Fire Department Fire & Arson Investigation Unit are actively investigating the incident, interviewing witnesses, canvassing the scene, and processing forensic evidence. No determination as to the cause of the fire has yet been established and thereby demanding further investigation.

The victim has been identified as Ida Martinez, a resident of 131 Park Avenue.

The City of Yonkers, Yonkers Police Department, and Yonkers Fire Department offer their sincere condolences to the family of the victim. No additional injuries have been reported and information is being released as it becomes available.

  1. Was this a legal 2 family house? Yonkers City Council better get on the stick and enforce these laws. If you see a bunch of migrants squatting in a house and turning into a multi family dwelling, call the Mayor’s help line and report these felons.
