Fire Forces 25 Residents to Gain Temporary Shelter at St.Peter’s School

YONKERS, NY — January 13, 2019 —An 8-apartment, 4-story multi-family residential building situated at 137 Hawthorne Avenue was ravaged by fire Saturday, January 12th. 

The alarm sounded at 2:44pm. The first Yonkers Fire Department Units responding were greeted with a voraciously large fire that emanated from a first floor apartment. Fortunately all residents self-evacuated.

The fire quickly traveled to the second floor apartment that was being consumed by the fire fueled fueled from the first floor apartment. The fire caused the situation to be elevated into a 2nd alarm .

Apartments on the 3rd and 4th floors suffered minor  damage commensurate with the first responders extinguishing the main body of the fire. The was was completely extinguished by 3:11pm

All YFD units were back in service by 5:25pm.

5 civilians were suffered injuries; 4 Firefighters suffered what are regarded as minor injuries.  

Firefighters rescued two dogs were rescued.

Yonkers Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross were on on scene to help relocate about 25 residents to a temporary shelter at St Peter’s School. It was unknown yesterday when residents might return.

Cause  of the fire is under investigation by the YFD Fire Investigation Unit.

A total of approximately 55 Firefighters responded.
