MOUNT VERNON, NY — April 13, 2019 — On April 11, 2019, County Executive George Latimer held his State of the County address which touched on many issues that directly impact the City of Mount Vernon. One of the issues discussed was the revitalization of Memorial Field.
State legislators have withheld funds earmarked for this project,
stating that the funds will only be released if Westchester County handles the construction. In a letter dated July 31, 2018, Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow, assured the County Executive, “that under no circumstances will the City have access to these funds.” In his address, Latimer noted that while this project is now in the hands of the county, the field still belongs to Mount Vernon.
Shawyn Patterson-Howard, candidate for Mayor of Mount Vernon, reiterates the importance of restoring this historic location, “As the only remaining legacy project, I join County Executive George Latimer and County Legislator Lyndon Williams in stressing the need to complete Memorial Field in a timely manner,” advised Patterson-Howard. “We must return our beloved field to the citizens of Mount Vernon for recreational use, entertainment and cultural gatherings.”
It was around 1999 that the deterioration of Memorial Field hindered usage of its full capacity. However, the field was closed once the conditions became unsafe more than a decade ago. The state of Memorial Field has often been used as a metaphor for the compounding issues that Mount Vernon has experienced over the years.
“The State of the County is progressing, modernizing and achieving,” the county executive said, “And it is our unity and collegiality that opens the door to greatness. We as a county have not yet reached where we want to be, or where we need to be, but we are advancing and doing it together.” Shawyn Patterson-Howard has promised to work with the county to facilitate the repair of Memorial Field and restore the credibility of Mount Vernon, should she be elected mayor.
“As Westchester grows so does Mount Vernon,” said Patterson-Howard. “As the gateway to Westchester County, Mount Vernon is ripe for economic development and I look forward to partnering with the county on initiatives that will attract and retain strong businesses and expand our tax base while simultaneously attracting living wage jobs.”
