This would be a historic first for the City of Mount Vernon which has never elected a woman to the top seat at City Hall. Community members and organizations show strong support at Patterson-Howard’s first campaign rally.
MOUNT VERNON, NY – MOUNT VERNON, NY — April 8, 2019 — On Saturday morning, April 6, 2019, enthusiastic supporters from all over the city came to rally around their preferred candidate, Shawyn Patterson-Howard. The high energy event at Lusiadas Restaurant in Mount Vernon was packed with a large crowd, some of whom went on to launch the volunteer effort by knocking on doors and signing up to host fundraisers and events for the candidate throughout the campaign season.
“She is of excellence. She is for the people. She is for the girls. And she is…the next mayor of Mount Vernon,” said Mount Vernonite, Cynthia Turnquest-Jones.
Patterson-Howard gathered prominent members of the local community such as Mount Vernon School Board Trustee, Israel Williams, former Mount Vernon City Councilwoman Loretta Hottinger, and members of Moms Demand Action. They have seen the results of Patterson-Howard’s work in their communities and they’re confident that she would bring the same passion and energy to the top seat in the City of Mount Vernon.
“Mount Vernon has a lot of challenges and Shawyn is a person that brings people together,” said Barry Graubart, Co-lead of Moms Demand Action. “Shawyn has been a key for our relationships both in Yonkers and Mount Vernon.”
“We need a healer,” said Former Councilwoman Loretta Hottinger during her remarks.
The room erupted into cheers screaming “Shawyn! Patterson! Howard!” many times leading up to and during Patterson-Howard’s speech. In her remarks, she emphasized the importance of her campaign being one powered by the people and that restoring the community and ending violence would be an important goal of hers.
“Being someone who has never been a politician or held elected office, I’ve been a resident and so I understand the thoughts and the concerns and the desires, the expectations and the standards of our stakeholders in our community,” said Patterson-Howard in a separate interview before the rally.
The well-attended event vigorously kicked off Shawyn Patterson-Howard’s campaign. Being in a crowded field, this sends out a strong signal to her opponents that she will put up a good fight.
