NEW YORK, NY — May 24, 2019 — “The Trump administration’s newest efforts to overturn anti-discrimination protections for transgender Americans provided under the Affordable Care Act is a disgraceful endorsement of discrimination and bigotry. This repugnant proposal is just another example of how this federal administration is spreading the toxic dynamic of hate in this country. Across the nation, we continue to see violence against trans people, particularly trans women of color. We want you to know – New York stands with you.
“While the federal administration continues its assault on our healthcare, New York is fighting back. This year, we enshrined critical protections from the Affordable Care Act into state law to ensure all New Yorkers are protected from insurance discrimination, no matter what the federal government does. And we enacted GENDA to codify into state law the nondiscrimination protections for trans and gender-nonconforming individuals that we originally issued through executive order.
“When reports surfaced last summer that the Trump administration could propose this despicable rule, we took immediate action and directed the State Department of Health to issue regulations prohibiting health care providers from discriminating against transgender patients and regulations expanding the scope of anti-discrimination protections for trans individuals when it comes to accessing health insurance.
“The bottom line is this: because of what we have done in New York, transgender and gender-nonconforming New Yorkers will not be impacted by this noxious federal rule. We have their backs.”
