OSSINING, NY – August 2, 2019 — On Wednesday evening the Ossining Police Department became aware of a string hanging from a tree in Louis Engel Waterfront Park that appeared to be tied in a noose. Ossining Police learned of this from News 12 who had been contacted by an Ossining resident.

Ossining Police Chief Kevin Sylvester

The police immediately began investigating the incident. Given the nature of the occurrence, the chief has met with members of local clergy and the NAACP, in addition to questioning individuals who may have witnessed anything in the park. Detectives encourage anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation to call 914-941-4099. All tips will be kept confidential.

A noose hanging from a tree is no different than a burning cross or a painted swastika. It is a call to racist violence, and it has no place in our community. As the investigation unfolds, we will learn if there is any criminal act to be charged and prosecuted.
Sincerely,
