TUXEDO, NY — October 10, 2019 — Chele Chiavacci Farley (R-Orange County) released the following statement regarding numerous reports about PFOS contamination of Orange County’s water supply and the failure of the federal government to remediate:
“The PFOS contamination stemming from Recreation Pond is a public health emergency. It’s a disgrace that the federal government has failed to take aggressive action to remediate the problem that it caused.
While New York State and local governments have taken steps to protect the public’s health, the federal government continues to delay even the initial step of installing a filtering system to prevent further contamination of our local drinking supply. In April, the Department of Defense, the agency responsible for the PFOS contamination originating at Stewart Air National Guard Base, indicated that this project would be completed by the end of summer. Instead, here we are in October and the project has not even started! Why has Congressman Maloney not been following up to ensure that the agreed timeline was met?
The federal government has failed residents of Newburgh, New Windsor and the surrounding areas whose drinking water has been contaminated. Our elected federal officials must take responsibility for this delay and both expedite the installation of this filtration system and, as I have previously called for, fully fund the complete remediation of the local waterways and wells affected by PFOS from Stewart Air Base.
Instead of focusing on endless inquiries and impeachment, Congressman Maloney and our federal officials must do the job they were elected to do. They cannot continue to enable an inefficient government bureaucracy to delay this process.
For over 25 years, I have worked in the financial services industry negotiating, overseeing and executing large deals both nationally and around the globe. As an Industrial Engineer by training, I have a passion and comprehensive understanding of this project. I am uniquely qualified to get projects like this completed on time, and would fight tirelessly in Congress on behalf of the forgotten constituents of NY’s 18th district.
It’s time that our federal representatives remember why they were sent to Washington – to actually get something done.”
