Anthony Merante, Yonkers City Council, District 6.

YONKERS, NY — Nov 25, 2019 – A meeting of the Community Services Committee has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 26th at 4:30P.M. in the Council Chambers, Yonkers City Hall, 4th floor to consider Resolution 2019 ( Attached) being proposed by 6th District Councilman Anthony J. Marante. The resolution calls for full respectful recognition of religious holidays by referring to them by their proper names.

By way of illustration, a “Holiday” Tree Lighting would be referred to as a “Christmas” Tree Lighting; a “Holiday” Menorah Lighting would be referred to as a “Chanukah” Menorah Lighting; a “Holiday” Kinara Lighting would be referred to as a “Kwanzaa” Kinara Lighting in order to recognize the individual faith communities that gave rise to the respective celebrations and traditions that are at the heart of these events that are widely anticipated and open to everyone to appreciate and enjoy.

Councilman Merante noted, “There is a great deal of cultural and religious diversity in the City of Yonkers, and Yonkers is home to many houses of worship encompassing Christianity, Judaism, Islam and other faiths and beliefs. I believe all religious holidays should be fully acknowledged by there proper names. In truncating or diluting them is disrespectful to their tradition. Christians celebrate Christmas with a Christmas tree. So when doing a lighting it should be referred to as a Christmas tree lighting in all the promotional aspects of the event.”
Councilmember Merante’s legislation would impact only official City of Yonkers events and those of it’s departments and subsidiary agencies.

  1. This guy can’t be serious. He voted to raise our taxes and only cares about Christmas trees. Is that the best he could do in 2 years? What about the pile of rocks they been building for years. Can’t wait to open up that storage facility . How many jobs will that provide Yonkers …lol

  2. I have to agree with other commenters here that this is an enormous waste of time. There has to be something more pressing in City government to address.

    1. Of course there is. This is the type of feel good nonsense they introduce when they can’t, or should I say WON’T, address the real issues and problems.

  3. Republicans are done in Yonkers. Ruby saw it coming. Merante the mental midget and Breen the Blimp are the laughingstocks of Yonkers. The Tubes has decimated the Republican Party. They should just rename the Republican Party the Spano Political Action Committee.

    1. Your right. There is no difference between the Republicans and Democrats on the Council. They serve the Spanos. Tubiola serves the Spanos. McGlaughlin serves the Spanos. Khader serves the Spanos . God Serves the Spanos

    2. This new legislation of Merante’s is typical of the absurdity going on in Yonkers! We have failing schools, crumbling infrastructure, high property taxes, increased water rates, an EXIT tax, income tax surcharge pitiful roads conditions, etc, etc, and this is what the Council focuses on!!!!

Wake up City Council!!! Do something meaningful like address when the exit tax is going to end? Or when is the Yonkers income tax surcharge going to end? Why is Yonkers the only municipality in the entire state with these extra chains on the taxpayer? How is this allowed to continue?

In my opinion, the entire City Council should be abolished. They add absolutely NO value or benefit to the city or its taxpayers! Their biggest responsibilities are the annual budget and zoning.

As for Budget, they basically just rubber stamp the Mayor’s budget, with very minimal change. The budget hearings are a complete joke, the questions posed are embarrassing and highlight their financial ineptitude. They offer no compelling challenge to root out waste or inefficiency and in the end just approve another tax hike!

As for Zoning, if we had competent Building and Planning Depts that were engaged, cooperative and more participative and receptive to the needs of the various communities in Yonkers, there would be no need of City Council involvement/approval in/of such matters.

Yonkers could save BIG money by eliminating these 7 seats, their respective staffs, all the associated family and friend jobs, city cars, their pensions and all the other perks!!! The return on investment for us the taxpayer is not worth the cost… as all the City Council members do is attend flag raising ceremonies, street re-namings, ribbon cuttings, campaign fund raising events for each other and other staged publicity events. It’s a mockery!

Just go with the strong Mayor concept as that’s what the sham City Council does anyway! They are all bought and paid for by the Mayor. So why continue to insult our intelligence and rob our pockets with these do-nothing positions.

  4. Yonkers is doomed..this bozo has done nothing, but you voted for him.So its you who look like idiots.6th district better start looking for someone to run.Funny though.you picked him, what kind of character will be next?..wake up 6th district….

  5. After 2 years in office, we have a nudey store, a smoke shop, and a Christmas tree. Well done. Now, where are those fliers that said you’d vote no to any tax increases…
