Here’s a change up for you – let’s get the basics out of the way. This week we are reviewing the Genesis G80, not the biggest nor the smallest of the Genesis line. RWD is Rear Wheel Drive, and 3.3T means 3.3 Liter, V6, GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection), Twin Turbo Engine with 365 HP. A V6 Turbo in a car this size is a perfect match, in my opinion, as acceleration was immediate and positive. Step down on this baby’s accelerator and you rock – seriously.

Gas mileage on the G80 was 17 around town and 25 on the highway, for an average of 20 mpg – not bad, but in my thinking, I wouldn’t buy this car for the mileage anyway. It is a very comfortable, quiet, easy driving, stylish four door sedan – and there are two very strong factors in a purchase, 1) How the buyer feels about, or perceives, the brand in general, and 2) The Price.

Having driven a lot of Hyundai over the past several years, people know Laurie and I are big fans. I like the looks of the Genesis G80, and while the side view above is a good view of the flowing lines and give the car a solid appearance, the front view below also shows the distinctive style of the front grill that makes it easy to recognize the Genesis line.

Oh, and part of the basics would be the cost. Our 2019 G80 RWD 3.3T Sport comes completely loaded for $56K, a lot of car for the money – a lot of car.

There is only ONE Hyundai model we weren’t crazy about (no need rehashing the past by mentioning it) and even then, that was on our “Hyundai scale” — not in comparison to other makes and models. We have long been among Hyundai’s most loyal cheerleaders. Few car manufacturers give you as much “bang for the buck.” This fully-loaded, $56k car compares to upwards of $68k and more from its competitors. But above and beyond all else, the beautiful thing about the 2019 G80 RWD 3.3T Sport is the number of additional features you can add to the base price: NONE. That’s right, this fully loaded beauty is all-inclusive. What you see is what you get as “standard” in this model. Across the board, the 2019 G80 has been awarded the highest marks for safety by the and the 2019 Women’s Choice Award for the best luxury sedan under $50,000. We agree with Hyundai, the maker, when they say the Genesis G80 offers “midsize luxury and performance that exceeds full size expectations.”

ADVANCED SAFETY TECHNOLOGY: Vehicle stability management, which gives you such smooth, even ride for a sport vehicle; traction control and brake assist, which importantly helps prevent wheel slip on icy, snowy and wet roads; 9 airbags, including driver’s knee airbag and anti-whiplash front head restraints and “pre-active seatbelts” which adjust to fit you securely. How many drivers do you know — and maybe you are one of them — who have suffered ACL or other injuries to your knee, or whiplash in a collision? You can have great medical insurance, folks, but preventative measures, such as these, way outweigh dealing with injuries that otherwise could have been limited, or even prevented. Remember, a car is a cockpit. The better you’re strapped in, the more thoughtful the measures a car manufacturer has undertaken to ensure your safety — well, you can’t put a price tag on that, can you? So, when we tell you that

this 2019 G80 RWD 3.3T Sport we test-drove, fully loaded, at $56k gives delivers luxury, performance, distinctive design and handling, the real value is the safety measures built into this performance model:

SAFTEY MEASURES: forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection — invaluable in a crazy, crowded, Christmas shopper-loaded parking lot at the big box stores or even in your own downtown; blind-spot collision warning with rear cross-traffic collision warning; lane keeping assist; driver attention warning (you think you’re in control until you hear the beep — and then you realize you’re only human); surround view camera — invaluable, and something we hope all vehicles soon integrate into their standard safety systems; parking distance warning, which helps avoid scuffing the front of your car against a concrete bumper; high beam assist (we love this feature, which regulates the high beam automatically at night); rain-sensing wipers and automatic defogging windshield — another feature that allows you to focus on the road instead of fiddling with the controls; and individual tire pressure indicator which can nip a slow leak in the bud.

Oh, we can go on and on … sport front seats that don’t cut into your, um, derriere; full adjustable driver and front passenger seats, both of which hare heated and ventilated; dual automatic temperature controls with CO2 sensor, smart cruise control with stop and go so the car, not you, is in control of the distance between you and the car ahead of you — and more often than not, the car is quicker than you are in assessing the situation (which could be a lifesaver, by the way.)

Then there’s the “Genesis Experience” — 3 year/36,000 mile complimentary maintenance and service valet, 3 year complimentary Genesis Connected Services, Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link, Map Care, and oh — did we mention the 9.2 inch touchscreen with navigation and a head’s up display on the windshield? Or the Lexicon ® Surround and Clarifi TM 17 speaker audio system (yes, 17!) with quantum logic which “extracts signal streams and impulse responses” from the original recording — in other words, a symphonic audio system that sounds as close to being there when the music was recorded as conceivable.

We quit! What more can we say? If you’re looking for a luxury sedan and in particular, this, the sport model, with the upgraded engine, adaptive suspension, gorgeous wheels, and all the bells and whistles, you can’t beat the 2019 G80 RWD 3.3T Sport. Heck, if you’ve been an especially good husband or wife this year, you might want to send Santa a letter, or maybe even an Email (does Santa do Email?)
