Driving Me Crazy automotive review Columnists Laurie and John Wiles.

PINEHURST, NC — March 11, 2020 —We have now had three of the new 2020 AMG 63 models to look at and evaluate. This week we had a chance to review the 2020 AMG C 63 S Sedan

First, it had no running boards, “Yea!”; and second, it was designated as a Sedan, no slopping roofline to make it a ‘coupe’, so again, “Yea!”, and the passengers in the back seat said, “Amen”.

Like at least one of our previous AMG Mercedes 63 S’s, we had 503-hp V8 Bi Turbo engine, an engine that takes this car from 0 – 60 in 3.8 seconds. Couple that with a 9 speed transmission that is incredibly smooth, a long and wide wheel base that literally hugs the road and you have the perfect cross of sedan comfort with pocket rocket performance.

The 503-hp 4.0L V8 biturbo engine is more responsive yet more fuel-efficient than previous AMG V8s. Its massive torque reaches its 516 lb-ft peak at just 1,750 rpm, and holds it all the way to 4,500 rpm, for a 3.8-second 0-60 time and instant acceleration at any speed. Yet even with its advanced design and technologies, each AMG GLC 63 S engine is still hand-built and signed by its own craftsman. Hand built – a hand-built engine on a beautiful, road hugging, ‘let’s get out and run’, Mercedes. While the price tag on the 63S starts at $75.5K, I am convinced that the most expensive part of this car is the hand-built, signed 503-hp engine, quite literally, the heart of the car.

Access the instrument cluster and you have every conceivable bit of information at your fingertips.  The center console touchpad controls the infotainment screen—just be careful, it’s sensitive and if you put your purse or cell phone on it, you may inadvertently change your radio station.  The multi-function steering wheel allows you to control so much at the tip of your finger.

The lights for night driving are second to none.  The sensors not only pick up auto dimming but pinpoint the darkest areas in your field of vision, adjusting the beams to provide a vast, homogeneously lit nightscape that precludes shadows or blind spots.  It’s utterly amazing.

The appointments in the design features, both interior and exterior, are beyond elegant. It is a good looking, comfortable car to drive too.

2020 AMG C 63 S Sedan’s AMG Dynamic Select.

I thought this photo was a good reference too. AMG DYNAMIC SELECT lets you alter the shifting behavior, throttle and steering feel, suspension damping and more by tapping a paddle on the console. Drive modes range from Comfort to Slippery to Sport+, plus an Individual mode you can configure for yourself. The C 63 S adds a track-tuned RACE mode

We’ve both talked about comfort, but I want to tell you about the seats.  They are adjustable every which way, heated and air-cooled, but the thing that stands out is the front passenger and driver’s seats are “kind of” like a sports coupe’s seats—only slightly raised on the sides versus those steep, cutting ridges on the sides of real sportscar seats, which cuts into your thigh. Both the seat and the steering wheel are adjustable and, once you have the configuration you want, you can set it to one of the three Memory slots. No more bumping your head when you wife has been driving – just saying.

A word about ‘road noise’. If you are on really smooth macadam, there is little road noise to contend with but get on some older rough road and it is extremely noisy, in my opinion, and the opinion of at least one other passenger, who wasn’t Laurie.

The voice recognition system, which took some getting used to the first-time, became my go to method of programming where we wanted to go. Push the voice activation button, tell it to navigate to the address you say and in less than a minute you get turn by turn directions. Same for phone calls and a lot of other features I didn’t get a chance to use.  At 18/27 mpg, it gets good gas performance as well. Beautiful, beefy, fast, yet fuel efficient shall we say? What price superior craftsmanship and design?  Indeed, what price tag can you put on this magnificent piece of machinery?

Can’t leave with our a few words about safety. As standard, the 2020 C63 and C63 S come with eight airbags, with protection for rear passengers and front knee airbags among the suite. Also included are features like crosswind assist, a drowsy driver monitor, collision preparation, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Our 2020 C 63S had, as standard:

Lane Keep Assist, which moves your car gently to center when you are in cruise control if the car drifts on a turn on even when you let it drift if going straight.

Active Brake Assist Radar-based technology can alert you if you’re approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as you start to brake, it can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. If you fail to respond, it can also initiate braking automatically at a range of driving speeds. The system can also detect and react to crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds.

And as an Option, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, a Mercedes-Benz innovation. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control uses radar-based technology to adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows down, it can reduce your speed automatically until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, it can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap of the accelerator or cruise control resume button, or it can resume automatically if the stop is under three seconds.

I really like the AMG concept of finally tuned, powerful cars that are safe, responsive, fast, controllable and comfortable. Got to work on that noise thing, but, hey, isn’t perfection what Mercedes is after?
