WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — May 28, 2020 — Mimi Rocah, Democrat running for Westchester District Attorney, dominated tonight’s League of Women Voters Candidates Forum against incumbent Anthony Scarpino, who was reading prepared statements for most of the event.
Tonight’s debate confirmed what so many Democrats already know: we need change in our DA’s office. Mimi Rocah is a progressive, experienced prosecutor who will move Westchester forward on critical areas like reducing gun violence, protecting workers, addressing the opioid crisis, and fixing the inequities in our criminal justice system. The alternative is to ignore these needs and keep an incumbent who admits he has been unable to even upgrade his computer system during 3-and-a-half years in office, much less deal with the many problems he is ignoring, dismissing or kicking down the road.
On all of these issues, Mr. Scarpino provided excuse after excuse, instead of recognizing that we need real reform and new leadership in this office. He even attempted to downplay his campaign taking donations from the owner of a company that was prosecuted and paid a $2.6 million fine for fraudulently claiming to use minority-owned businesses when he was not doing so.
Mr. Scarpino likes to say that “talk is cheap” — his record and what he said tonight sadly prove that. Mr. Scarpino provided canned excuses, not answers, when it came to the racial inequality in our criminal justice system, why the office has not implemented restorative justice programs, and failing to actively use diversion programs. He blamed his predecessor, as our corrupt president is so fond of doing, for the many things he has failed to achieve in his term of office.
“As we consider the challenges facing our county, and our country, Westchester deserves a DA who will do more to keep our families safe, to stand up to the Trump administration, and to ensure justice for all. I am ready to be that District Attorney,” asserted Rocah.
