PINEHURST, NC — September 1, 2020 — Two weeks ago, I was writing and talking about the 2020 Ford Expedition King Ranch and what a big vehicle it was. This week we got another ‘monster truck’ to review, the 2020 RAM 1500 REBEL Crew Cab EcoDiesel 4X4. That’s a mouthful to start, but it is quite a truck.

If you are a truck guy, or girl, you are probably going to like this truck. The RAM Rebel is big, bold, beautiful (in a ‘monster’ kind of way), and able to do big time jobs while giving the passengers and driver an easy, smooth, and quite ride. This is not your old-style diesel.

If I had the space, I would probably have put 20 pictures in this article. You need to SEE the truck, from all aspects, outside front, back, sides, bed, crew cab, driver’s seat, and so on, because there is a lot, and I mean a lot in this truck. I suggest instead that you go to https://www.ramtrucks.com/ram-1500/gallery.html and look at both the exterior and interior pictures. If you like them and are looking for what should be a great truck, go to your dealer and handle it. Look at all the nooks and crannies, and I think you will be impressed too.

2020 RAM 1500 Rebel Crew Cab EcoDiesel 4X4

Like I said, this isn’t your old-style diesel; AND I think that is a good place to really start this review. This is an EcoDiesel engine, a V-6, 3.0L, Turbo Diesel, Gen-3. What all does that mean? The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine boasts 240 horsepower, 420 lb. -ft. of torque, and can manage to tow up to 9,210 pounds. With that impressive tow rating, and a payload capacity of 1,600 pounds – the Ram 1500 is incredibly powerful when equipped with this engine. It can tow; it can haul; and it’s quiet and comfortable to boot.

“But wait, there’s more” – okay, sorry, I couldn’t resist. Our 2020 Rebel came with a 33-gallon fuel tank and an average of 24 mpg, 21 around town and 29 on the highway. Just think, at 24 mpg, you would have 792 miles to cover before you needed to refuel … 792 miles. Wow. Plus, and I have talked about turbos and reaction times before, the 2020 Rebel was very responsive when you stepped down on the gas. Does it roar? No, but it reacts quickly and the smooth steady and powerful surge in power is obvious and awesome. The engine is also matched with an 8-Speed Automatic Transmission, which I found very smooth and quiet.

Let’s talk price for a moment. The suggested retail base price on this vehicle is $47,960, so let’s use $48 as the round number. That’s a lot of truck for the money in my opinion. However, there were lots and lots of optional equipment on this one to make it the REBEL that it is – enough options to bring the price to $71,305. Let’s see – $71 – $48. That’s $23,000 worth of options. Whew!

While some of the options are not too expensive, having the REBEL label does add considerable cost to the mix. The Rebel 12 package added just under $3K to the cost. It includes creature comforts like power adjustable seats, Sirius XM, Wi-Fi Hotspot, HD Radio, Heated front seats, Heated steering wheel, and a 12” Navigation System.

The Rebel Level 2 Equipment Group added another $3K to the cost and included a 115-Volt Auxiliary Rear Power Outlet, an 8.4-inch Touchscreen Display, an AC Auto Temperature Control with Dual-Zone Control, a media hub with two USB ports and wireless phone charger, exterior mirrors that fold in and signals in the mirrors as well, heated seats and steering (again), ParkSense and Rear Park-Assist with Stop. I actually got to test this as I was backing up in my driveway and got too close to one of the hedges, the car beeped, flashed a warning light on the dash, and stopped itself simultaneously. Granted I was doing one mpg, and I knew the bush was there, BUT I was surprised how quickly and decisively the truck reacted.  I liked it. Also in this package were Rain-Sensitive Windshield Wipers, Rear Underseat Compartment Storage, Rear Window Defroster, Remote Proximity Keyless Entry, Remote-Start System, and Universal Garage Door Opener. A couple of these items I think would be very useful, especially the Underseat Compartment Storage. There are actually storage units in the floor of the passenger seats and under the seats as well. Not only are those useful, but sometimes ‘out of sight, out of mind’ is good when you are traveling.

2020 RAM 1500 Rebel Crew Cab EcoDiesel 4X4 gallery interior.

The 12” navigation screen fills up the dash with controls for heating and air, fan speeds, radio, towing and more located on each side and below the very sharp display. Handy!

Park, Reverse, Neutral and Forward are all controlled by a knob just to the right of steering, as well as buttons for four-wheel drive, low and high, and two-wheel drive. Very Efficient.

Our RAM 1500 Rebel came with a $550 Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover. The 3.0L, V6, Turbo Diesel Engine, Gen 3 was an additional $4,995, or say $5k; the Dual Pane Panoramic Sunroof was just under $1500; the Black Tubular Side Steps (a must) were $695; the Rear Wheelhouse Liners were $195; the Multi-Function Tailgate was $995; the wonderful 33-Gallon Fuel Tank was $445; the Air Suspension, 4 corner (like the ride) was $1,805; the Blind Spot and Cross Path Detection was $595 (I’d get it); the RamBox Cargo Management System was $995, but worth it I think; the Trailer Brake Control and Spray-in Bedliner added just at $900, and the destination charge was $1695. And that, friends, is how you do from $47K to $71K in less than a thousand words.

The beast from the east has a 5 year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and gets five stars in Safety Rating in just about every category. Face it, if you are going to be in a fight on the road, a big powerful truck like this is quite the armor.

Is it for everyone? Definitely no, but for your workers who use your truck as your office and business, and also carry friends, co-workers, and employees to job sites, or if you haul horses, carry work tools, haul or travel long distances in rough terrain, or snow, need four wheel drive, and want to do it all comfortably and as safely as possible, please give the EcoDiesel line of RAM trucks your consideration. The 2020 RAM Rebel certainly makes a statement about muscles, men, and their machines.
