PINEHURST, NC — December 26, 2020 —  This big, beautiful truck was our ride for the past week, and I loved it. Laurie had other thoughts she can share with you, but I was very happy with our Northsky Blue Metallic 2021 Silverado, with jet black interior, and a Duramax 3L Turbo-Diesel engine and 10 speed transmission.

The first thing I noticed on the truck was that, with a tank full of gas, I could go 648 miles, according to the read out on the instrument panel, but Chevrolet says you can go 728 miles on a tank full of diesel. Are you reading this? The next thing I noticed and loved was that the truck was quiet – a big diesel that’s quiet? Are you kidding me? And when I got it out on the road and gave it some ‘diesel’, the truck responded like a gas vehicle and roared into ‘turbo mode’ without hesitation. What’s not to like about all this? Nothing that I could see. Should I break into a chorus of “I love my truck; it’s right outside. I don’t have much; but I sure got a ride!” Well, I could.

This is about the time I would say, “If money were no object, I would build a bigger garage to house one of these along with the other winners we have driven this year.” But the truth is that the Silverado starts at $28,600 and that is affordable on just about anyone’s budget. Ours, the Crew Cab, RST, 4 Wheel Drive, has a $46,500 base price, and is $55,900 with $7,645 worth of options and delivery charges. Not cheap, but here’s a diesel that looks good, gets great mileage for a big truck, (23 around town, 33 highway, for a 28-mpg average, so those of you who follow pump prices would like that as well), tows 9500 pounds with 277 hp, carries 2,280 pounds, 460 pounds of foot torque, and has right at 90 cubic feet of storage space.  Oh, “What does RST mean”, you might ask. RST stands for Rally Sport Truck. Don’t your feel smarter? I did, and can you say “Varoom, Varoom?”

Did I tell you it rides great and is quiet?… Well, now I have told you again.

Here’s a few interior things you might like on a truck –

Let’s start with the cabin is bigger in almost every way, offering more shoulder room and rear passenger space than the previous generation, plus best-in-class front head and leg room. Then, to help you keep your eyes on the road, an available multi-color 15-inch diagonal Head-Up Display can project information, like your vehicle’s speed, available navigation and active safety alerts, onto your windshield. And here’s something I loved and found practical and handy – Two available segment-first rear-seatback storage compartments, rear underseat storage and a spacious compartment in the available center console offer the room you need to store your gear while you’re on the go.  How about heated and airconditioned front seat, heated leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, dual zone climate control, power windows, carpeted floors with rubber floor mats (included), and a 10-way powered driver’s seat with lumbar support?

So far, we have been talking standard equipment. How about a few of the options and what you get for the money?

The Duramax 3L Turbo Diesel was an additional $2300, but if you plan on keeping your truck for 100’s of thousands of miles and take care of it, it’s a small investment for the ‘long haul’. The “All Star Edition Plus” has too many features to mention, but check them out, and the other additions, at There was a Leather Package for $760, a Bed Protection Package for $685, a Convenience Package with Bucket Seats for $545, a Trailer Brake Controller for $275, and most importantly to me, a Safety Package for $890. The Safety Package features Front and Rear Park Assist, which I think is important when you are driving a bigger rig like this one; Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert; and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

I couldn’t fine Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on our Silverado statistics and information sheet, which surprised me, as these safety features appear on many of the Chevrolet car and truck models. If the aren’t there, ask for them. If they are an option, purchase that option. GM Authority said the 2021 Silverado was supposed to get “a host of improvements when it comes to active safety technology, including the expansion of Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, and Forward Collision Alert technologies.” Be bold, if you are buying this truck to keep and to work in, you need it as safe as possible for yourself and your family. Make sure you get those safety options.

Okay, maybe I am just a sucker for a pretty face … I mean truck. I like the style, the size, the color, the ride, the power, the … well, just about everything on this 2021 Silverado RST 4 Wheel Drive truck. Again, for $55K, which is no small change, you are still getting a heck of a truck with a long life ahead of it.

Johnny, let me add a few things.  With 26 mpg highway and 22 city, this colossal Duramax 3L turbo diesel, full-size, crew cab, four-wheel-drive truck does incredibly well on fuel consumption, drives beautifully, is incredibly powerful and surprisingly quiet.  My only hesitation—and it’s not the truck, it’s me—is this: inside, sitting either shotgun or behind the wheel, you get the sense that this truck is comfortably wide—not too wide, like some, not narrow in the least, just comfortable.  However, this contributes to the problem I personally experience, which is, the chassis is deceivingly long.  I’m sorry if I don’t explain this clearly, but what I’m trying to say is, whether as the driver or front seat passenger, I’m comfortable.  I don’t feel overwhelmed by the interior space.  Because of this, I was not able to judge the length of the truck when, in particular, it came to turns.  Invariably, the rear end would go into the shoulder or onto a curb.  What this instilled in me was a sense that I did not have the kind of control I thought I had.  Would this change if the interior space felt larger, or was wider?  I don’t know.  All I know is, this was the first time I experienced this feeling.  Again, me…not the truck.

Yes, you need two parking spaces at the grocery store to park.  Yes, I wish there were a running board.  If I owned this truck, I would certainly have looked into an aftermarket running board—or a pole to vault into the seat from a running position.  The only other thing that gives me pause is the $7,600+ options package, which includes the trailer brake controller, rear cross traffic alert, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, front and rear park assist, HD rear vision camera—safety features you should not have to do without in a vehicle like this, this size, and for the purpose it is built.  Bluetooth radio streaming, wireless Apple Carplay and android, Bose premium sound system, USB ports and 120volt instrument panel and cargo bed power outlets—these are not necessary, perhaps, but in this day and age, I don’t know many drivers of a truck like this who would care to do without, especially on long hauls or driving offroad and into remote places.

Bottom line? It’s a Chevy Silverado, a mainstay in General Motors truck line since 1999 for goodness sake.  That’s 22 years!  What more is there to say?

As we close this column, Johnny and I would like to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.  A dark cloud shrouds the world.  These are unparalleled times, and many find it very difficult, if not impossible, to embrace the spirit of the season.  But there is hopethere is always hopeas long as you believe, believe with all your heart, in the goodness of mankind.  

There is a passage in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol that I hold dear and have, many times, quoted in my various columns and books over the years.  By way of setting the scene, it is Christmas Eve.  Scrooge is in his bitter-cold place of business with barely one lit coal in the fire.  His nephew suddenly arrives to wish him the joy of the season.  And so, it goes—

“A merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!” cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew, who came upon him so quickly that this was the first intimation he had of his approach.

“Bah!” said Scrooge, “Humbug!”

He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge’s, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again.

“Christmas a humbug, uncle!” said Scrooge’s nephew. “You don’t mean that, I am sure?”

“I do,” said Scrooge. “Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You’re poor enough.”

“Come, then,” returned the nephew gaily. “What right have you to be dismal? What reason have you to be morose? You’re rich enough.”

Scrooge having no better answer ready on the spur of the moment, said, “Bah!” again; and followed it up with “Humbug.”

“Don’t be cross, uncle!” said the nephew.

“What else can I be,” returned the uncle, “when I live in such a world of fools as this? Merry Christmas! Out upon merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in ’em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will,” said Scrooge indignantly, “every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!”

“Uncle!” pleaded the nephew.

“Nephew!” returned the uncle sternly, “keep Christmas in your own way, and let me keep it in mine.”

“Keep it!” repeated Scrooge’s nephew. “But you don’t keep it.”

“Let me leave it alone, then,” said Scrooge. “Much good may it do you! Much good it has ever done you!”

“There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,” returned the nephew. “Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!”

Yes…a time “when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.”  May you, too, open your heart to this “kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time” and bask in the golden glow of the season—today, and every day.  Merry Christmas.
