For people of all faiths, it is essential to show reverence to God. One of the easiest and most well-known ways to show this reverence to God is through prayer.

As a Christian, I found it essential to set aside time each day to pray and spend time with God. This does not have to look the same for everyone and each individual will find different methods and practices usual in their prayer life.

Prayer Centers the Mind

It is known that we live in a fast-paced world with many people and technologies that are constantly trying to grab our attention. It is difficult to focus and not feel anxious many days. For myself, I need to take time each morning to write out a list of what I plan to accomplish for that day.

Before I write out my to-do list for the day, I take time to close my eyes at my desk and ask God about His plans for me for that day. How can I be focused and disciplined for what God wants me to accomplish and not only for myself?

Research shows that prayer has the ability to reduce the feeling of stress, anxiety, and isolation. It is no wonder that God encourages people to pray. It is not in God’s interest in being ‘self-seeking’, rather it is for the benefit of mankind to center ourselves on something being ourselves.

Prayer Helps Set Priorities

It is natural to be ambitious and want to accomplish a lot in a day or a lifetime. This is natural and how we were created. However, if we are not careful we can easily begin to prioritize our own goals over what God wants us to do.

One way to help set priorities is by studying the Bible and know what plans God has for us. Reading the Bible for even 5 minutes each day helps create a healthy routine and allow for a person to set their priorities on things outside of themselves. As a result, life becomes less about what we can get and becomes about how we can serve and help others.

It is often during prayer that I realize that there are people in need in my own life and there are things that I can do to help support them.

How to Pray

The Lord’s Prayer

If you are lost and do not know how to pray, I would suggest starting with The Lord’s Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that Jesus taught His followers. It is by far the most famous Christian prayer and is recited by both Protestants and Catholics around the world.

Start small. It is important to start small and think that you need to spend countless hours on your knees in the dark in order for your prayers to be heard or beneficial. Rather, think of prayer as a simple conversation with God and a way for you to open up a conversation with the Creator. In the same way that it is essential to communicate with a spouse or friend in order to have a healthy relationship, it is just as important to pray regularly to have this relationship with God.

In Summary

We often feel like we are the most important being in the world. As if we are the center of the universe. As a Christian, I know that this is not true in my mind, but often in my actions and motives, I am pursuing my own desires. This is why it is essential to pause and pray each day and allow God to align His intentions with mine.

This quiet time of prayer allows for self-reflection and a deeper understanding of the world and my relationship with it.
