This week, our nation experienced a disturbing attack on our most hallowed institutions of government.
The preeminent responsibility of all elected officials is to serve the interests of all their constituents, regardless of their political affiliation. As servants of the public, we swear an oath to faithfully execute our duties on behalf of those we represent and to protect the institutions which empower us to serve them. This sense of service was lost by some in our Government, whose dereliction of duty in exchange for immediate political expediency prefaced the abhorrent display of senseless violence and destruction which aimed to impede some of the most sacrosanct work of the United States Congress, to reflect the will of the people and continue the 244-year American Experiment in self-governance.
The actions of these unscrupulous actors who sought to undermine the will of the people and commit an assault on our democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law must be condemned on the most unequivocal of terms.
Despite this, I’m confident that our nation will emerge from this period of political upheaval and turbulence stronger than ever before. Resilience is central to our national character. Through World Wars, economic downturns, pandemics, and more, our nation has stood as a shining beacon of light to the world demonstrating that together, we can and will see this through.
