Mount Vernon City Hall issued the following statement, “We are working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) to expedite the process of replacing the more than 120-year-old bridge. While we understand that this will increase traffic and delays in the area, public safety is paramount. Foot traffic and access to the Mount Vernon East train station will remain open.
“Based on preliminary discussions with the MTA we anticipate that replacement of the bridge will begin in the summer of 2022. As re-opening of the bridge is a top priority of this administration, be assured that we will work closely with our state and federal partners to get this done.”
